Jenny Wegner achieves perfection; rolls first 300 game in 53rd World Cup

Jenny Wegner of Sweden is in a familiar place after averaging over 240 in the first round of the women’s qualifying in the 53rd QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup Monday at Bol 300 in Hermosillo, Mexico.

Wegner (left) led a field 54 women from 54 different countries with 1445, which included the only perfect game of the event so far. It was the 73rd perfecto in the history of the World Cup and the 15th by a woman.

Coaching the Swedish players at the World Cup in Hermosillo is Peter Ljung (right), who is a world Cup champion himself since he swept the men’s and women’s titles for Sweden with Annette Hagre at the 22nd edition in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1986.

Wegner started the mission title defense with a 192 game before making her run at perfection to move to the top of the leaderboard and never looked back. The 23-year-old 2017 European Bowling Tour point ranking leader closed with 224, 227, 248 and 254 to hold a 56-pin over Vanessa Timter of Germany.

The former national team member, who earned her spot in Hermosillo by winning the German World Cup qualifier, had a high game of 277, four games between 225 and 237 and a low game of 184 to sit in second place with 1389 and an average of 231.50.

Krizziah Lyn Tabora (right), Philippines, and Maribel Orozco from Mexico bowled saved their best for the last game to finish the first of four six-game qualifying blocks in the top 4.

The Filipina, who started with five games between 202 and 236, closed with 264 to sit in third place with 1364. The bowler from the host country (left) connected on nine consecutive shots on the way to a 272 last game to help grab fourth place with 1355.

Three-time PWBA champion Rocio Restrepo (right) of Colombia was the only other woman who surpassed the 1300-mark with 1312, including games between 205 and 233, good for fifth place.

Rebecca Whiting of Australia and PWBA champion Siti Safiyah (left) of Malaysia were tied for sixth place at 1270.

Two-time World Cup champion Aumi Guerra (right) of the Dominican Republic was mere one pin behind in eighth place with 1240.

Eighth place belonged to Åse Jacobsen (left) of Norway with 1240. Four-time European Bowling Tour titlist Ghislaine Stigter-Van der Tol rounded out the top 10 with 1231, 124 pins off the pace for the top 4.

Stephanie Martins (right) of Brazil, who led the field after 245 opening game, finished the day in a tie for 17th place with Laura Piros of Romania at 1181.

Suzanne Howell of New Zealand currently holds the 24th and last place to survive the qualifying cut with 1144 or an average of 190.67.

The women will return to Bol 300 on Tuesday morning for the second block of qualifying starting at 10.00 a.m. Mountain Standard Time (MST).

The 53rd edition of the QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup will be held from Nov. 4-12 at Bol 300 in Hermosillo, Mexico.

All competitors will bowl 24 qualifying games over four days before the field is cut to the top 24 for eight additional games. The 32-game pinfall totals will determine the 8 players who advance to eight games round-robin match-play (30 pins for each win, 15 for a tie).

The top 4 players with highest 40-game total including bonus pins will advance to the playoffs. There will be a one-game knockout match with the No. 1 seed versus the No. 4 qualifier and No. 2 versus No. 3. The winners of each match will earn a spot in the championship game.
