Latvia’s Diana Zavjalova takes the early lead in Bowling World Cup

Three-time Professional Women’s Bowling Association Tour champion Diana Zavjalova (right) of Latvia averaged 218.63 at Sam’s Town Bowling Center in Las Vegas, Nev., USA, to set the tone in the women’s division of the 54th QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup which got underway Tuesday with the first out of three eight-game blocks.

Zavjalova, who won the United States Bowling Congress Queens in 2017 and 2013, toppled 1749 pins to beat out one-time PWBA champion and two-time European Bowling Tour titlist Sin Li Jane (left) of Malaysia for the top spot by 17 pins.

Sin, who won the 2017 Pepsi PWBA Lincoln Open, knocked down 1732 pins, an average of 216.50.

Germany’s Nadine Geissler (right), who led the field after four games, finished the day in third position with 1722 (215.25).

Rounding out the top 4 was 2018 PWBA Player of the Year Shannon O’Keefe (left), USA. The seven-time World Champion checked in with 1684 (210.50).

Just outside the top 4 looking in was multiple Pan American Bowling Confederation (PABCON) champion Karen Marcano (right) of Venezuela, who was just six pins behind O’Keefe with 1678.

Marcano was followed by Tania Yusaf of Scotland (6th, 1653), Nadia Pramanik (left) of Indonesia (7th, 1653), Tannya Lopez of Mexico (8th1648), Yanee Saebe of Thailand (9th, 1638) and Viviana Delgado of Costa Rica (10th, 1628).

The women will bowl their second block on Wednesday morning starting at 8.30 a.m. with the men to follow at 1.30 p.m. Pacific Standard Time (PST).

All competitors at the 2018 QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup will bowl 24 qualifying games over three days before the field is cut to the top 24 for eight additional games. The 32-game pinfall totals will determine the 8 players who advance to eight games round-robin match-play (30 pins for each win, 15 for a tie).

In a change to last year, the top 4 players with highest 40-game total including bonus pins will advance to the finals. No. 1 bowls no. 4 and no. 2 bowls no. 3 in the semi-finals. The winners bowl for the title.
