« David Cirigliano leads team, ties Open Championships record

Romeo (pictured above), who qualified second for the double-elimination match-play bracket after averaging 220 through 15 games of qualifying at The Orleans Bowling Center in Las Vegas, is one of eight undefeated bowlers left in the field.
The USBC Hall of Famer began match play with a 679-539 victory against Shelley Nell of Silverdale, Washington, and followed that with a win against 2010 USBC Senior Queens champion Char Hammel of Las Vegas, 612-537.
While there still is work to do, Romeo is in great position to add to her hall of fame resume. A win Thursday would help the 58-year-old right-hander match fellow USBC Hall of Famer Sandra Postma for the most career Senior Queens titles.
“I’m trying not to think about making the show or going for a three-peat, but it’s hard not to,” Romeo said. “If tomorrow’s a good day and I’m on the show, it’s going to be exciting, and I’m going to really look forward to trying to win a third one.”
Romeo will face the seventh seed, Sharon Powers of Lakewood, Colorado, in her opening match Thursday. Powers defeated Deborah Lee of Canada and Michele Carter of National City, California, in her opening matches. Despite being undefeated, Romeo understands the importance of not looking ahead.
“I just tried to stay within myself,” Romeo said. “A lot of times, you start to look ahead to what’s next, and one of the things I learned from bowling the Queens for all of these years is that you can’t look ahead. You need to stay focused on your game and not worry about your opponent.”
The winners’ bracket also includes top seed and USBC Hall of Famer Tish Johnson (right) of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Johnson, who has finished second at the event in each of the last three years, still is looking for her first Senior Queens victory.
The elimination bracket features two past champions – USBC Hall of Famer Lucy Sandelin (2007 and 2013) and Paula Vidad (2011).
The 16 remaining players will return to the lanes Thursday at noon Eastern. The 2016 event will conclude Thursday evening with a five-player stepladder final, beginning at 9:30 p.m. EDT. All rounds of the 2016 Senior Queens are being broadcast live on BOWL.com’s BowlTV.
The winner at the 2016 Senior Queens will take home the top prize of $3,000 from the estimated $20,000 prize fund. The event is open to all female USBC members age 50 and older.
