Ryan Ciminelli extends Xtra Frame PBA Tour points lead

2015PBAWSOBEJTackett.jpgWith a second-place finish in Sunday’s PBA Xtra Frame Storm Open at Liberty Lanes in Carpentersville, Ill., to go along with his win in the bowlingball.com PBA Maine Shootout earlier in the month, Ryan Ciminelli of Cheektowaga, N.Y., has taken a seven-point lead over XF Storm Open winner EJ Tackett of Huntington, Ind., in the race for the overall Xtra Frame PBA Tour points crown and a $10,000 bonus.

Tackett (right) earned 25 points for his win in Carpentersville, following a ninth-place finish in Portland, while Ciminelli (pictured above at the PBA World Championship) picked up another 19 points. After two of 10 Xtra Frame PBA Tour events, Ciminelli and Tackett are the only two players with top 20 finishes in both events.

The next tournament in the series is the PBA Downums Waste Services Greater Jonesboro (Ark.) Open presented by Xtra Frame, June 3-5.

The current top 10 in Xtra Frame PBA Tour points are: 1, Ryan Ciminelli 44; 2, EJ Tackett 37; 3, Tommy Jones 19; 4 (tie), Tim Gillick and Steven Taylor 18. 6 (tie), Patrick Allen, Shawn Maldonado, Sean Rash and Tim Mack 17; 10, Norm Duke 16.

PWBA season opener, PBA50 events fill Xtra Frame schedule

2016XtraFrameLogo2.jpgComing up on PBA’s Xtra Frame schedule will be coverage of the preliminary rounds of the first PWBA Tour event of the 2016 season, the PWBA Las Vegas Open, April 30-May 1, from Texas Station, followed by start-to-finish coverage of the PBA50 Mooresville Ford Open presented by Columbia 300 and Miller High Life, May 2-4.

PWBA and PBA50 Tour coverage continues with the Nationwide PWBA Sonoma County Open May 6-7; the PBA50 Johnny Petraglia BVL Open presented by Brunswick May 8-10 and the PWBA Storm Sacramento Open May 13-14.

QubicaAMF PBA Regional Update: Jakob Butturff wins first of three Hawaii events

Jakob Butturff (pictured above at the 2015 Viper Championship) of Chandler, Ariz., defeated amateur Justin Stevens of Aiea, Hawaii, 245-211, to win the PBA Hawaii West/Northwest Open presented by Brunswick at Schofield Lanes on Schofield Army Base Sunday, kicking off the annual PBA West/Northwest Region Hawaii tripleheader series.

Butturff, the PBA West Region’s 2015 Rookie of the Year, has now won three regional titles. He also received $2,000 for his win. Butturff defeated Scott Norton of Mission Viejo, Calif., 218-194, and Stevens defeated Tom Daugherty of Tampa, Fla., 208-198, in the semifinal round to set up the championship match.

2016PBA5001WalterRayWilliams2.jpgIn a best-of-three-game final between Walter Ray Williams Jr. (left) of Oxford, Fla., and Lee Brosius of Ashburn, Va., Williams got payback by defeating Brosius, 237-182, 227-265, 246-212, to win his 33rd QubicaAMF Regional title in the PBA50 Sarasota South Open presented By Ebonite at Sarasota Lanes on Friday.

Fresh off winning his 10th PBA50 Tour title in the season-opening PBA50 Pasco County Florida Open three days earlier, Williams earned $2,300 in a rematch of the PBA50 Fayetteville Southern Open title match in March, when Brosius defeated Williams.

The mid-week PBA50 regional event featured a number of PBA50 Tour stars who were traveling between the Pasco County Open and the tour’s second stop of the season, the United Healthcare PBA50 Sun Bowl in The Villages, Fla., which began Sunday.

In the semifinal round, Brosius swept Bill Peters of Dayton Ohio, 277-229, 228-225, while Williams defeated Ron Mohr of Las Vegas, 242-206, 280-181.

This weekend, the PBA West and Northwest Regions completes its annual Hawaii tripleheader with the Hickam AFB West/Northwest Open April 29-May 1. The PBA50 Tour heads north to North Carolina for the Mooresville Ford Open presented by Columbia 300 and Miller High Life May 1-4, the QubicaAMF PBA Regional Tour will include a second mid-week event, the PBA50 Cherokee Lanes South Open presented by Roto Grip in Canton, Ga., April 28-30. Victory Lanes in Kankakee, Ill., will host a Midwest Regional Challenge event for non-title winners.

The QubicaAMF PBA Regional Tour schedule for the May 13-15 weekend includes the Al Jones Memorial presented by Storm at Rockaway Lanes in Rockaway, N.J., and the Baldo Campana Memorial/Ohio Lottery Central/Midwest Open presented by Storm at Rebman Recreation in Lorain, Ohio.

The May 20-22 QubicaAMF PBA Regional Tour schedule includes the J.D. Producing/Star Strategies/Orrivilon Inc. Central Open presented by Hammer at Triway Lanes in Wooster, Ohio; the Planet Bowl Southwest Open in Oklahoma City, and a Northwest Region doubleheader – The Shock Top/Budweiser Open presented by US Foods and Brunswick plus the PBA50 Daffodil Bowl Open presented by Sunset Chevrolet and Brunswick in Puyallup, Wash.

The Midwest Region will conduct a one-day Tony Grigat Allstate Midwest Open presented by Hammer on May 21 at Fox Bowl in Wheaton, Ill.

As PBA50 players head toward Las Vegas and the Suncoast PBA U.S. Senior Open presented by 900 Global May 29-June 3, they’ll have a couple of regional opportunities in Arizona – the 7th annual Lona King Saguaro West Open at Johnson Lanes in Sun City West, May 23-25, and the PBA50 Miller Lite Western Open at Starlite Lanes in Flagstaff May 25-27.

Over the May 27-29 Memorial Day weekend, QubicaAMF PBA Regional competition will include the Junction City Bowl Southwest/Midwest Open presented by MOTIV in Junction City, Kan. (which was originally scheduled for May 13-15); and the Colony Park Lanes East Challenge for non-title winners in York, Pa.

The third Xtra Frame PBA Tour event of the year, the Douwnums Waste Services Jonesboro PBA Open presented by Xtra Frame at Jonesboro Bowling Center in Jonesboro, Ark., June 3-5, kicks off the June calendar.

Veteran PBA stars Mike Durbin of Dallas and Harry Sullins of Chesterfield Township, Mich., will be among the 2016 USBC Hall of Fame honorees inducted Thursday evening at The Orleans in Las Vegas. USBC will live-stream the induction ceremonies at 10 p.m. ET (7 p.m. PT) on its BOWL.TV service, accessed through bowl.com.

Correction: the addition of the PBA Xtra Frame Las Vegas Open to the 2016 Xtra Frame PBA Tour series makes it the 10th event, not the 11th as noted in last week’s PBA Fall Classic announcement. The XF Las Vegas Open at South Point Bowling Plaza replaces the Xtra Frame Detroit Open, which was cancelled and replaced by the PBA Fall Swing Sept. 4-11 at Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park.
