QubicaAMF PBA Regional Update: Timothy Tripp wins first PBA title in Las Vegas

2014PBAWSOBTimTripp.jpgTimothy Tripp (pictured left) of Santa Clarita, Calif., defeated non-member Justin Spurrier of Las Vegas, 245-175, to win the South Point West Challenge on Friday, March 25, and non-member Jon Nakagawa and Jakob Butturff teamed up to win Sunday’s companion South Point Member/Non-Member Doubles in a PBA West Region doubleheader at South Point Bowling Plaza.

On Friday, Tripp earned $2,000 and eligibility for the 2017 FireLake PBA Tournament of Champions with his first PBA title. He defeated Craig Spencer of Tempe, Ariz., 222-216, while Spurrier defeated Dwight Burns of Tucson, Ariz., 212-178, in the semifinal round to set up the championship match. PBA Challenge events are open to non-champions only.

2015PBAJakobButturff.jpgNakagawa, of San Jose, Calif., and Butturff (right), of Chandler, Ariz., defeated Russ Oviatt of Sioux Falls, S.D. and Benjamin Canfield of San Diego, 478-438, in the title match to claim the $5,000 doubles first prize.

College student Dallas Leong from Las Vegas, Nev., won five of his final six matches Sunday to win the PBA Copperfield Bowl Southwest Challenge, presented by Global 900, in Houston.

Leong, a student at UNLV and a non-member of the PBA, was visiting friends on spring break in Houston, and decided to enter his first PBA event. He threw three strikes in the ninth and 10th frames of the final game position round to overtake runner-up Jonathan Pokorny of Converse, Texas, for the victory.

PBA Challenge events are open only to non-members who have not won a PBA event and PBA members not credited with a PBA title. Because he is a non-member, Leong collected the $2,500 first prize but doesn’t get credit for a PBA title.

Leong, who led the 13-game qualifying portion of the event, started the modified round robin match play finals by losing his first match and tying his second, but he then won five of his final six matches to overtake fellow non-member Pokorny by 43 pins for the win. Pokorny took the lead by winning his first five matches, and led Leong by seven pins going into the final game.
