Mack dominates, rolls first perfect game of Kingdom Open

2008KSAShakerAlHassanChampion.jpg In a title match between the two top-seeded players, Shaker Al-Hassan (pictured with the trophy) defeated compatriot Naif Oqab, 224-208 en route to win the 2nd Kingdom International Open at Universal Bowling Center in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and the 30,000 Dollar first-place check.

Al-Hassan was the sole undefeated player in the double elimination match play finals as he sent Oqab to the Losers Bracket in the final of the Winners Bracket.

2008KSATop4.jpg Oqab then ousted the Paeng Nepomuceno, Philippines, over two games total pinfall, 473-423, for the right to bowl Al-Hassan for the title. However, he had to defeat Al-Hassan twice to win the title.

Oqab received $18,000 for second place, Nepomuceno pocketed $12,000 for third place and Mahmoud Mazloum, Egypt, garnered $10,000 for fourth place.

Final Round One separates the wheat from the chaff in Saudi Arabia


2008KSATimMack300a.jpg American Tim Mack (left) missed the top 7 in the qualifying of the 2nd Kingdom International Open by four pins and had to bowl in Final Round One Saturday at Universal Bowling Center in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The former World Champion started the round with a 300 game, the first in this year's event and added games of 216, 195, 254, 245 and 286 (785 for the last three games) for 1496 six-game total and an average of 249.33.

Mack led the top 22 plus the next best two Saudis, Faisal Tariq Sugati and Yousef Akbar in 23rd and 24th place, into the double-elimination match play finals with 3648 pinfall total, an average of 243.20 for 15 games.

Another U.S. American, PBA champion Pat Healey, was fourth with 3388 behind a 1243 series.

Nepomuceno shoots into fourth place to earn one bye for the finals of Kingdom Open

Oqab's three highest 3-game series in the 14-day qualifying resulted in a 2245 9-game series, an average of 249.44. His compatriot Shaker Al Hassan was second with 2202.

Near perfect game propels Al Hassan into second place in Riyadh

Al Hassan has a 2202 nine game total only trailing his compatriot Naif Oqab, who held on to the lead with 2245 or an average of 249.44.

Two Qataris crack top 5 in Kingdom International Open

Akbar cracks top 7 in Riyadh

It was a long Tuesday for Akbar, who started the day in 12th position with 3-game series of 689, 672 and 638. The Saudi bowled 5 out of 9 qualifying squads but was unable to improve his qualifying total in the first three squads (578, 600, 560).

A 258 in the third game of the penultimate squad helped him to a 647 series, his third highest score at that time. He carried the momentum into the last squad, where he rolled 230, 289 and 211 for 730 pinfall total, an average of 243.33, to leap into 7th place with 2091 pinfall total (232.33).

In addition the 289 was the highest game of the day which gives him a chance for a 2,000 Dollar bonus. On the last day of the tournament the name of one of those daily winners will be drawn out the hat and the lucky winner will receive the $2,000.

Oqab overtakes lead in 2nd Kingdom International Open

Oqab started squad No. 8 on Monday evening with 258, then fired the high game of the day, 289, and closed out the set with 248 for 795 or an average of 265.00.

Together with his second and third-highest series (736 and 714), Oqab leads the field of 74 players with 2245 9-game total and an average of 249.44.

Al Sheikh continues to lead Kingdom International Open

Heading into the final week, Al Sheikh leads the field of 58 bowlers with 2190 9-game total and an average of 243.33.

Each qualifying squad features three-game series. The three highest series count. Al Sheikh owns the highest series of the tournament with 769 and added 719 and 702.

The only other player, who has three 700-plus series is Naif Oqab, who regained second place on Sunday thanks to a 714 series. Oqab high score is 736 and he had also a 710 for 2160 (240.00).

Majid Saleh Al Aslani was third at 2121, with Talal Towereb in fourth, 2102, and Mohammed Al Saud, all Saudi Arabia, in fifth, 2098.

Mack's compatriot Josh Blanchard started the tournament with a 682 set including a high game of 257. Humberto Vazquez, Mexico, rolled bowled three consecutive squads (550, 535 and 606) and sits in 39th place with 1691 (187.89).

Hassan, who won the gold medal in Doubles at the 2006 Asian Games with his brother Bader, is the sole player thus far, who managed three 700-plus series. His third-highest series of 702 brought his nine-game qualifying total to 2190 or an average of 243.33. Hassan received a 2,000 Dollar bonus for leading the 51-player field after the first week.

Second place after the first week belonged to Naif Oqab with 2109, worth $1,000. Talal Towereb, Saudi Arabia, was mere seven pins behind to sit in third place with 2102. He received $500.

Towereb regains lead in Kingdom International Open

Towereb added his second and third-best series (699 and 688) for 2102 9-game total, a 233.56 average, to overtake previous leader Mohammed Al Saud (right) by four pins. Al Saud is second with 2098. Third place belongs to two-time Asian Games champion Bader Al-Sheikh, both Saudi Arabia, with 2061.

Bader (right) totaled 2061 (229.00), while Hassan (left) had 1960 including the highest series of the day (702).

Saudis continue to dominate qualifying in Kingdom International Open


2008KSAMohammedAlSaud.jpg Local bowlers continue to dominate the qualifying in the 2nd Kingdom International Open at Universal Bowling Center in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The Saudi currently man the top seven places or 13 of the top 15.

Mohammed Al Saud (pictured left) rolled the first 700-plus series to move into the lead on Monday. Al Saud's three highest 3-game sets are 718, 697 and 683 to lead the field of 35 players with 2098 and an average of 233.11.

Previous leader Talal Towereb slipped to second place with 2035, with Hrh Abdul Hakim in third (2034), Yasser Abulreesh in fourth (1994) and Abdullah Amoudi in fifth (1938).

Ernee Noto, Philippines, is the best foreign bowler with 1884 and an average of 209.33. Brunswick's Rick Benoit, United States, is 13th at 1785.

2nd Kingdom International Open is underway in Saudi Arabia


2008KSATalalTowereb.jpg Five players from Saudi Arabia led the qualifying of the 2nd Kingdom International Open which got underway at Universal Bowling Center in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia during the past weekend.

Talal Towereb (pictured left) had 3-game series of 688, 686 and 661 to take the early lead with 2035 nine-game total and an average of 226.11.
