The top 10 men and top 10 women after 24 games preliminaries determined the champions in nine games round robin match play with the pinfall from the preliminaries carried forward.

Both Vontobel and Chollet led the top 10 into the finals, but while Chollet coasted to victory in the women's division, the men's division was decided in the 10th frame of 33rd and final game.

Second-placed Mathieu Bergès, who averaged 231.89 in the finals, needed three strikes in his final frame to shut out Vontobel and win the championships. When Bergès got an 8-count on his first ball, Vontobel needed a double to win and that was exactly what he got.

Larry Vontobel finished with 7275 total including 180 bonus to become the 2009 Swiss National Champion. Bergès was mere 9 pins behind in second place with 7266 (150). Dario Ancarani got the bronze with 7145 (210).

Chollet secured the women's title with 6534 including 135 bonus. Val√©rie Cornuz and Marie-No√ęlle Gozzo finished in second and third place with 6447 and 6315, respectively, including the field-best 210 bonus.

The champion will represent Switzerland at the 2000 European Champions Cup in Chania, Crete, Greece, in September.
