Field is cut to 48 in 7th Euro-Med Storm International Masters Challenge

    200910PBALonnieWaliczek.jpgAfter five qualifying days, the field of 77 players from 15 countries - Australia, Chinese Taipei, England, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Norway, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Thailand, UAE and the United States - was cut to 48 players, who advanced to the finals on Thursday and Friday.

    The 48 consisted of the top 3 players from each of the five qualifying days plus the top 33 from the overall qualifying standings.

    Two-time PBA champion Lonnie Waliczek (pictured) had the highest six-game qualifying total of all competitors after posting a 1586 on Tuesday, an average of 264.33 for six games.

    2009AsYGMichaelMak.jpgKorean pro bowler Jeong Tae Hwa rolled a 1460 series (777 and 683) on the final day of qualifying to become the daily leader. As second-place Eric Tseng (1427) and third-place Michael Mak (right, 1426), both Hong Kong, were already qualified since Day One, fourth-place Jeff Butler, United States (1406) and Lee Yu Wen, Singapore (1386) took advantage and got the bye.

    Kim Yong Pil from Korea took the 48th and final spot to advance with 1386 or an average of 231.00.

    The 48 players will bowl 8 games from scratch to cut to the top 24 who will bowl another 8-game block from scratch on Friday after which the field will be trimmed to the top 8. Those 8 will determine the four finalists in round robin match play (seven games plus position round) starting from scratch (10 pins bonus per win, 5 for a tie).

    The top 4 will advance to the stepladder finals. No. 4 bowls No. 3 and the winner takes on No. 2. The winner of the semifinal match must defeat the top seed twice to win the title. The winner will walk away with one million Philippine Peso or approx. 21,000 U.S. Dollar.

    Standings after Qualifying


    A total of 48 players - the top 3 daily leaders (places 1-15) plus the top 33 qualifiers - advance to the next round. Women receive 8 pins handicap each game.
