2009 European Bowling Tour #11
Ends on Saturday night with Desperado Squad

Lars Nielsen (pictured left) posted just the second 1400-plus series of the 7th Columbia 300 Vienna Open in the penultimate qualifying squad Saturday afternoon at Plus Bowling in Vienna, Austria. Nielsen started out commandingly with 246, 268, 259 and 256 (1029/4) and closed out his et with 176 and 209 for 1414, an average of 235.67. Mikko Hirvonen, Finland, who had 1408 in the pervious squad, fell to second place with Dutch Lisanne Breeschoten, in third place with 1396 including 48 pins handicap.
Another eight players reached the 1300-plateau. Two-time EBT Masters champion Kamilla Kjeldsen (below, left), Denmark, was a distant second with 1351 to leap into 10th place. Defending champion Patricia Luoto, Germany, leaped into 20th place with 1331.

Next were Achim Grabowski, Germany (1328, 25th); PBA exempt player Stuart Williams, England (1326, 26th); Timo Alho, Finland, who had 1326 but could not improve his 1373 (7th); former PBA Player of the Year Brian Voss, United States, who had 1312 but is sixth with 1376; Marco Parapini1, Italy (1.308, 36) and Oliver Mielentz (right), Germany (1301, 39). Mielentz had the front 11 in the last game but left a 9-pin for 299. With 322 players in the books and just one regular squad to go, Tim Friedrichs, Germany, holds the 52nd and final place to advance with 1286 (214.33). Friedrichs as well as 53rd placed Franz Hahn, Austria, also 1286, will qualify for the finals as one of the squad leaders of Squads 1-6.

Anne Lorraine Gales and Kamilla Kjeldsen, Denmark, led Squad 16 in Doubles with 2604 pinfall total, good for 9th place in the Doubles standings. Thomas Larsen and 15-year-Austrian youth bowler Rowby Rodriguez (pictured left) held on to the lead with 2681 pinfall total and an average of 223.42 for six games.
Dennis Eklund, Sweden, and Tore Torgersen, Norway sit in second place with 2676 followed by David Canady and Tina Hulsch (pictured right), both Germany, in third place with 2645.
Qualifying will end on Saturday night with the 17th and final squad at 8pm and the ultimate one-game Desperado Squad scheduled for 11.30pm.
Bowlingdigital will be providing live streaming Saturday night and throughout the finals on Sunday, Oct. 4.
The 7th Columbia 300 Vienna Open is the 11th stop of the 2009 European Bowling Tour and one of the Tour's "Majors". The tournament will be held from Tuesday Sept. 29 through Sunday Oct. 4, 2009 at the renovated 32-lane Plus Bowling in Vienna, Austria.
More than 340 players will compete for an increased total prize money of 68.130 Euro - 65.630 Euro - 55.400 € in Singles and 10.230 € in Doubles. The singles champion will receive the 6.000 Euro top prize while the doubles winners will split 1.600.
Once again the qualifying for the Vienna Open finals is contested as a doubles tournament. Each duo rolls at least one six-game block. Unlimited re-entries with different partners are possible but each player can only cash once with the same partner.

The team with the highest total pinfall including handicap will be declared the winner (no finals will be played). The top 20 doubles will cash. Bigi Manico, Switzerland and Tanya Cuva (nee Petty) are the defending champion.
Qualifying runs from Tuesday through Saturday and ends with the ultimate one-game Desperado Squad on Saturday night Oct. 3 slated for 11.30 pm local time (GMT +1). Women receive 8 pins handicap each game, a standard on the European Bowling Tour.
