PBA champ Doug Kent powers his way into the lead in Luxembourg

2009EBT13DougKent.jpg2009EBT13StuartWilliams.jpg10-time PBA champion Doug Kent (pictured left), United States, became the first player who cracked the 1400-bar in the qualifying of the Ebonite International Luxembourg Open Friday night at X-Treme Bowling & Billard in Foetz, Luxembourg.

The 2006-07 PBA Player of the Year, who own four career PBA Majot tiles (USBC Masters 1991, 2006; PBA World Championship 2002, 2007), rolled games of 212, 267, 211, 264, 246 and 227 to power his way into the lead with 1427 pinfall total and an average of 237.83.

Kent received an unexpected 250 Euro bonus for winning squad 10. Actually only the winners of the first five squads should receive a bonus. As Squad 3 was cancelled, the organizers announced that the bonus would go to the Squad 10 winner.

Previous leader Stuart Williams (right) fell one spot to second place with 1367. Dominic Barrett, both England, was second to Kent in Squad 10 with 1361 en route to leap into third place in the overall qualifying standings.

Squad 8 leader, Osku Palermaa, Finland, used a 1320 to finish the penultimate day of qualifying in 7th place. Achim Grabowski , Germany, chalked up 1289 to land in 13th place. Ghislaine van der Tol (right), Netherlands, is the top ranked woman in the field of 150 players from 16 countries in 12th place with 1291 including 48 pins handicap, a standard for women on the European Bowling Tour.

With the final four squads to go, Michael Coussens, Belgium, holds the 44th and last place to advance with 1201 (200.17).

The Ebonite International Luxembourg Open is the 13th stop of the 2009 European Bowling Tour and one of the Tour's "Challenger" events. The tournament will be held from Oct. 20-25, 2009 at X-Treme Bowling & Billard in Foetz, Luxembourg, and offers total prize fund of 35.000 Euro, or about 52,350 U.S. dollars. The winner will receive the 4.000 Euro top prize.

Qualifying ends on Saturday, Oct. 24 with Squad 14 and the ultimate one-game Desperado Squad slated for 11.30 p.m. local time on Saturday night.

A total of 50 players - the top 44 from the qualifying (six games) and top 6 from the Desperado Squad - will advance to the finals on Sunday, Oct. 25. The top 14 qualifiers will earn one bye and will be automatically seeded into Final Round 2.

The remaining 36 players will bowl 6 games starting from scratch. The top 18, seeded 15th-32nd, will join the top 14 qualifiers in single-elimination matches over two games total pinfall. The highest seed bowls the lowest seed, the second highest bowls the second lowest, etc.

The single-elimination finals start with the Round of 32. The field is cut to 16, 8, 4 and then 2 who will vie for the title and 4.000 Euro top prize.
