Marcus Berndt wins 19th Malta Open Championships from top seed

2010MaltaOpenMattChamberlain.jpgMarcus Berndt (pictured), Sweden, led the 19th Malta Open Championships at Eden SuperBowl in St. Julian's in qualifying and earned the No. 1 seed for the stepladder final after going 9-2 in match play averaging 221.

In the championship match in best-of-three games format, Berndt swept No. 2 seed Matt Chamberlain (right), England, two-games-to-none, to win the title and the 2.500 Euro top prize.

In the opening match of the four-player stepladder final, George Stavrinou (below left), Cyprus, seeded third, eliminated fourth-seeded Menno van den Heuvel (below right), Netherlands, who qualified for the finals through the Desperado Squad, 235-201.

Chamberlain pocketed 1.500 Euro for second place, Stavrinou got 1.100 Euro for third and Van den Heuvel received 700 Euro for fourth.

The 19th Malta Open Championships drew 88 players, 78 men and 10 women, from 11 countries. The top 26 after 12 games qualifying plus the top 4 from the Desperado Squad advanced to the finals. The top 6 qualifiers earned two byes and positions 7-12 bypassed the first round.

Women received 8 pins handicap each game. Cherise Denham (pictured left), England, was the sole woman, who made it into the match play portion en route to land in 12th place.
