Singapore's Basil Low remains unchallenged; leads top 4 into Boys Singles finals at Thailand WYC

    2012WYCBasilLow.jpg2012WYCShusakuAsato.jpgBasil Low (pictured left) of Singapore, who posted a huge 1449 six-game series in the first of four squads in the Boys Singles event at the World Youth Championships in Thailand, remained unchallenged en route to earn the No. 1 seed for Tuesday's finals.

    Low, who averaged 241.50 on the long oil pattern, out averaged his nearest competitor, Shusaku Asato of Japan by more than 10 pins. Asato led Squad C Monday afternoon at Blu-O Paragon Bowling Center in Bangkok with 1387 (231.17) and was followed by South Korea's Ryu Ji-Hoon (below left), who took the third place with 1370 (228.33).

    2012WYCRyuJiHoon.jpg2012WYCMarshallKent.jpgHeading into the final game of the last squad, Marshall Kent had to beat Squad D leader Alexandre Lepolard of France by 19 pins but also needed a 246 game to tie Sam Cooley of Australia, who previously held the fourth and last spot to advance.

    And that was exactly what Kent did. Kent, who had a slow start into the event with 197 and 180 but recovered with 227, 223, and 246, closed things out with 244 for 1317 (219.50) to beat out the Aussie for the last spot in the finals by the higher last game.

    2012WYCSamCooley.jpg2012WYCMarkWong.jpgCooley (left) finished his 1317 series in Squad A with 236, which came behind the field-best 290 in game five. Cooley, who won the silver medal in Singles at the 2010 World Youth Championships, had to settle for fifth place.

    Low's compatriot Mark Wong (right), who was third to Asato and Ryu in Squad C, fell two pins short of the cut number to finish in sixth place with 1315.

    Trailing Wong by another four pins was Andreas Skoglund (below left). The Norwegian led Squad B with 1311 and was the top European finisher in seventh place. Syimir Abdul Razak, who was third in Squad A, slipped to eighth place with 1309.

    2012WYCAndreasSkoglund.jpg2012WYCPierreMontagne.jpgPierre Montagne (right) of France was five pins behind Skoglund in Squad B to end up in ninth place with 1306. Rounding out the top 10 was 2010 World Youth Championships Team and Masters gold medalist Kim Ju-Young of South Korea with 1300.

    178 boys from 47 countries competed in the Boys Singles event and were split into four squads to bowl six games preliminaries on the long oil pattern. The top 4 players advanced to the finals. The Boys Singles Finals with be staged alongside with the Girls Singles Finals from Noon to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, June 26th.

    2012WYCLogo.jpg The 12th World Youth Championships takes place at Blu-O Paragon Bowling Center in Bangkok, Thailand, from June 22 - July 3, 2012.

    274 girls and boys from record 48 countries, who must not have reached their 21st birthday on January 1, 2012, will compete will compete for gold, silver and bronze medals in Singles, Doubles, four-player Team event, All Events and Masters in the ten-day event.

    The WTBA patterns "Mexico City" and "Atlanta" will be used in Bangkok. The 45-foot Mexico City pattern is the second-longest of the twelve WTBA certified lane pattern (four short, four medium and four long). With a length of 38 feet, the Atlanta pattern is the shortest of the four medium pattern.

    Singles is being played on "Mexico City" and Doubles will be contested on "Atlanta", while the Team event will feature both oil patterns (3 games on each pattern). The Masters will be staged on dual lane condition (one lane dressed with the medium pattern and the other lane dressed with the long pattern).

    The top four players and teams after six games in Singles, Doubles and Team, respectively, will advance to the semifinals. The No. 1 meets No. 4 and No. 2 takes on No. 3. The winners will determine the World Youth Champion, while the losers will share the bronze medal. All matches are single-game matches.
