Jesper Svensson moves into fourth place on penultimate qualifying day in Stockholm

    Swede shoots 1395 in Squad 12; Wogel, Wendel, Andersson continue to lead the 334-player field; Joline Persson Planefors is the best of 55 women in 10th place; cut for 62nd place is the 1275 (212.50 average)

    2014AIKJesperSvensson.jpg2014AIKJesperLarsen.jpgThree Jespers (Svensson, Larsen & Hagberg) and Mattias Wetterberg, all from Sweden, paced Squads 9-12 on the penultimate qualifying day of the 34th AIK International Tournament 2014 Saturday at Bowl-O-Rama in Stockholm, Sweden.

    Team Pergamon's Jesper Svensson (pictured left), the defending Ballmaster Open champion, was the top-scorer of the day with 1395, an average of 232.50, to move into fourth place on the 334-player leaderboard. The two-handed national team member put together games of 219, 269, 224, 226, 184 and 273.

    The top three remained unchallenged Jimmy Wogel of Tyresö BK held on to the lead with 1479 and is followed by Tommy Wendel of Stureby BK and Team Pergamon's Robert Andersson with 1452 and 1439, respectively.

Jesper Larsen (above right) of Team Pergamon led Squad 11 with 1367 including a 299 game, the highest game of the tournament so far, to overtake eighth place in the overall qualifying standings.

    Finn Saku Konttila of bowling club Ailec was just eight pins behind with 1359, good for 10th place. Two PBA champions, Chris Loschetter (left) and Tom Hess (right), bowled in this squad. Loschetter sits in 33rd place with 1318, while Hess is 49th with 1297.

The Swede is the best of 55 women in ninth place.

    Mattias Wetterberg (right) of bowling club Full House paced Squad 10 with 1309 including a 276 game to finish the day in 39th place. Squad 9 leader Jesper Hagberg (below right) of BK Brio toppled 1297 pins and sits in 50th place due to the lower last game than Hess (200 to 243).

    2014AIKJesperHagberg.jpgWith three more squads to go, Frida Löhnert of BK Cahoot holds the 62nd and last place to qualify directly for the finals with 1275 including handicap or an average of 212.50 scratch.

    Qualifying concludes on Sunday, January 5, with Squads 13-15 scheduled to start at 8.00 a.m., noon and 4 p.m. CET.

    2014AIKLogo_small.jpg The 34th AIK International Tournament runs from Dec. 26, 2013 through Jan. 6, 2014 at Bowl-o-Rama, a 28-laner in Stockholm, Sweden, and offers total prize fund of 309.500 Swedish Kronor or approximately 34.660 Euro with 60.000 SEK (€6,720) going to winner, 30.000 SEK to the runner-up and 20.000 SEK and 15.000 SEK to the third and fourth place finishers, respectively.

    Qualifying (six games; unlimited re-entries) started on Dec 26 and runs through Sunday, Jan. 5 with the final qualifying squad starting a 4 p.m. CET. Women receive 8 pins handicap each game.

    Total 92 players advance with 36 of whom going directly to Final Round 1 on Sunday including the top 30 qualifiers, players 1-4 from the Early Bird squads and the top player each from Turbo 1 (qualifying game #5) and Turbo 2 (qualifying game #6).

    56 players including qualifiers 31-62 and another 24 players who qualify through various "gateways" (Ladies, Juniors, 60 & over, 50 & over, dynamic handicap, Turbo 1 and Turbo 2) bowl four games (2+2) scratch in Semifinal Round 1 starting on Sunday evening, Jan. 5.

    The top 24 advance to Semifinal Round 2 to bowl another three games with the four-game total of Round 1 being carried over. The top 12 players join the 36 players, who received a bye, in Final Round 1 starting Monday morning Jan. 6.

    Those 48 bowlers bowl six games scratch to cut to the top 24 bowlers who bowl further four games after which a cut to the top 10 is made. Pins carry over after each round.

    The remaining 10 players determine the champion in nine games round robin match play plus one game position round. During match play, players receive 20 bonus pins for winning a match and 10 pins each in the event of a tie. No bonus pins is given in the position round. The winner is the player with the highest total after 20 games including handicap and bonus.
