Priscilla Maaswinkel, Tom van der Vliet win All Events titles at Dutch National Championships

    Priscilla Maaswinkel and Tom van der Vliet (pictured, r-l) emerged as women's and men's All Events champions at the Dutch National Championships 2014 at Claus Event Center in Hoofddorp. It was the second national title after 2011 for Maaswinkel and the first for Van der Vliet.

    Total 79 participants, 61 men and 18 women, participated in the highest division. They bowled eight games of qualification with the Top 20 men and the top 10 women advancing to the final rounds on Sunday, March 16.

    After two intermediate rounds the top 4 competed in best-of-three games semifinal matches for a spot in the final. Van der Vliet defeated Johnny Spil, two-games to none, to bowl underdog Maikel van den Born for the title. Van der Born surprisingly defeated No. 1 seed Michell Stinissen in the other semifinal match.

    Van der Vliet and Van den Born, both playing for Eindhoven, won a silver medal in Doubles earlier this championships. Van der Vliet swept his partner, 2-0, to wrap up the title.

    On the women's side, Maaswinkel, who won her first national title in 2011 also at Claus Event Center, took the fourth and last spot for the semifinals. Her match against the No. 1 seed and defending champion, Nicole Sanders, was decided in the third game, 225-215, in Maaswinkel's favor.

    In the other semifinal match, Lisanne Breeschoten went the distance to defeat Jolanda Visser 2-1. Breeschoten and Maaswinkel, both from the Nieuwegein bowling association, traded wins over the first two games of the championship match.

    Breeschoten took a 1-0 lead with a big 235-150 win, but Maaswinkel leveled the match with a two-pin win in game two, 193-191, to force a deciding third game. Maaswinkel carried the momentum into the decider and cruised to the title, 244-177.

    By winning the National Championships, Van der Vliet and Maaswinkel will represent The Netherlands at the 2014 European Champions Cup 2014 in Reykjavik, Iceland (Oct. 13-19).
