Carlo Greulich shoots big last game to win 37th Grand Prix Zurich

    2014GPZCarloGreulich.jpg2014GPZFrankBorner.jpgCarlo Greulich (pictured left) of Germany finished the final round with a big game en route to win the 37th Grand Prix Zurich Sunday at bowling center BESECO, a 22-laner in suburban Winterthur, Switzerland.

    In the handicap tournament, which featured a special position point system format, Greulich was one point behind fellow countryman Frank Börner (right) heading into the last game. The lefty fired a 258 game to beat out Börner (233) for the top spot by eight points, 119 to 111.

    Greulich averaged over 245 for seven games on his way to the title. Börner had to settle for second place averaging 240.57 in the finals. Pascal Winternheimer, Germany, finished a distant third with 95 points and an average of 218.14. Sandro Ancarani was the best Swiss bowler in fourth place with 78 points and an average of 206.71.

     

     


     

     

    2014GPZTop3.jpgThe 37th Grand Prix Zurich drew 95 players from Switzerland and Germany. All players bowled eight games of qualifying with the top 42 advancing to the semifinals. 50 percent of the qualifying total including handicap was carried forward.

    The 42 players bowled another three games with the top 28 advancing to the second round. The total pinfall was carried forward. Those 28 bowled another two games to cut to the top 14 for the finals.

    The finals of the 37th Grand Prix Zurich featured seven games starting from scratch. In each round points were awarded to the players according to their position in the respective round. 1st place - 14 points; 2nd place - 13, 3rd place - 12, …… 14th place 1 point.

    At the end of Round 7 double points were given to the players according to their position based on the 7-game total including handicap. 1st place - 28 points; 2nd place - 26, 3rd place - 24, …… 14th place 2 points.
