Oliver Morig captures title at 39th Grand Prix Zurich

    2016GPZurichOliverMorig.jpgOliver Morig of Germany averaged 234.43 for seven games to capture the title in the 39th Grand Prix Zurich Sunday at bowling center BESECO in Winterthur, Switzerland. Morig took home the 1.100 Swiss Franc top prize.

    The handicap tournament was dominated by German scratch bowlers, who took the first four places in the 2016 event.

    2016GPZurichTobiasBording.jpg Morig (left) rolled games of 217, 270, 256, 196, 202, 256 and 244 in the final round, which featured a special position point system format, to finish with 1641 pinfall total.

    Morig collected 101 points for his seven games including 28 points for the highest series to beat out Tobias Börding (right) for first place by seven points. Börding hit 1400 on the nose, an average of 228.57, to finish in second place worth 910 CHF.

    2016GPZurichPascalWinternheimer.jpgJust two point behind Börding was fellow German national team member Pascal Winternheimer (left), who averaged 221.29 for 1549 total and received 92 points. Nadine Geissler was the best woman in fourth place with 1565 (223.57) and 91 points.

    The 39th Grand Prix Zurich was held from May 22-29, 2015, at bowling center BESECO, a 22-laner in suburban Winterthur, Switzerland, and drew 93 players.

    All players bowled eight games of qualifying with the top 42 advancing to the semifinals. 50 percent of the qualifying total including handicap was carried forward. Those 42 bowled another three games to cut to the top 28, who bowled further two games after which the field was cut to the top 14 for the finals.

    The finals of the 39th Grand Prix Zurich featured seven games starting from scratch. In each round points were awarded to the players according to their position in the respective round. 1st place - 14 points; 2nd place - 13, 3rd place - 12, …… 14th place 1 point.

    At the end of Round 7 double points were given to the players according to their position based on the 7-game total including handicap. 1st place - 28 points; 2nd place - 26, 3rd place - 24, …… 14th place 2 points.

    As the player with the highest point total, Morig was declared the winner of the 39th GP Zürich.

    Seven games, position point system. In each of the seven games including handicap points were awarded to the players according to their position in the respective round. At the end of Round 7 double points were given to the players according to their position based on total pins including handicap. The player with the highest point total was declared the winner.
