Malaysians dominate 5th Czech Open

Malaysia's rising stars Zandra Aziela (center) and Siti Safiyah Amirah (left) battled it out for the title in the 5th Czech Open in a best-of-three game final. Aziela, the No. 2 seed, fired two huge games (226 and 246) to defeat top seeded Amirah, 2-0, en route to earn the title and the 2.000 Euro top prize.
Most of the 178 participants from 15 countries must have been very surprised when they found out that the entire Malaysian national squad - men and women - participated in a tournament that offers less than 6.500 Euro total prize fund (approx. $8,740).
13 of Malaysia's finest took on the 12 lanes at bowling center 'Bowland' in Olomouc, Czech Republic. When the dust had settled the Malaysians took the top 3 spots, which earned more than 50 per cent of the total prize fund, and had a total of eight players among the top 12.
48 players advanced to the semi-finals and were divided into eight groups with six players each. The group leaders after round robin match play advanced to the finals to bowl seven games of round robin after which the top two qualified for the Masters final.
Amirah averaged 229.29 and won five of her seven matches to earn the No. 1 seed with 1770 pinfall total. Aziela had the field-best 6-1 won-loss record to beat out Zulmazran Zulkifli (pictured right) for the second spot by 41 pins, 1746-1705. Martin Orálek, Czech Republic, was the best non-Malaysian bowler in fourth place with 1664.
Alex Gabrielian, Ladislav Å imánek and Tomek Janicki rolled 300 games.
