Bowlers from Netherlands Antilles surprise in Masters competition at Kingdom Games

Bowlingcentrum Wijndaelerduin in The Hague, Netherlands (July 21-27, 2007)

Chantal Statia and Tarik Samandar, Netherlands Antilles, are the surprising gold medalists in the girls and boys Masters in the Kingdom Games 2007 at Bowlingcentrum Wijndaelerduin in The Hague, Netherlands. In the best-of-five title match, Jacobs swept her opponent, Dutch Chantal Jacobs, 3-0, while Samandar came back from being down 1-0 against Nigel Maduro, Aruba, to win 3-1.

300 athletes from Aruba, the Netherlands and Antilles and the Netherlands between 12 and 17 years of age participated in the Kingdom Games 2007. The Games consisted of seven sports, Baseball, Bowling, Judo, Soccer, Softball, Swimming and Tennis, and took place at various locations in The Hague, Netherlands.

Top 8 girls and boys advance to Masters finals in Kingdom Games 2007

300 athletes from Aruba, the Netherlands and Antilles and the Netherlands between 12 and 17 years of age participate in the Kingdom Games 2007. The Games consist of seven sports, Baseball, Bowling, Judo, Soccer, Softball, Swimming and Tennis, and take place at various locations in The Hague, Netherlands.

"It's a fierce competition in friendly surrounding. Almost everyone speaks Dutch," said former European Ranking champion Bettina Lund, who now works for the Dutch Bowling Federation (NBF).

"Bowling is part of the Kingdom Games for the second time. We have to work hard to get a chance to be a part of the next Kingdom Games since the sports are limited to seven," Lund explained. "The organizers want to give as many sports as possible a chance to experience this kind of mini-Olympics."

The bowling competition takes place at bowling center Wijndaelerduin. Four girls and four boys per country are competing for gold, silver and bronze medals in Team (6 games), Doubles (6 games), Mixed Doubles (6 games) and Singles (6 games). Medals will also be awarded for All Events and Masters.

The boys from Aruba, Alwin Leysner, Siegfried Torres, Nigel Maduro and Elwin Falconi, and the Dutch girls (pictured left), Kimberley van Beek, Samantha Maaswinkel, Ilona de Kuijer and Chantal Jacobs, grabbed the first gold medal in the four-player team event.

Danny Bernard/Ramon Hilferink, Netherlands, earned the gold medal in the Boys Doubles, while Shary Albertus/Thashaina Seraus took the gold in the girls division.

The gold medal in Mixed Doubles went to Samantha Maaswinkel and Xander van Mazijk from the Netherlands.

Dutch boys, Bas Bosman, Xander van Mazijk and Danny Bernard, led in Singles and All Events. Bosman and Van Mazijk won the gold and both silver medals, respectively. The bronze medals went to 4th placed Nigel Maduro from Aruba as no country can win more than two medals in any event.

Thashaina Seraus and Shary Albertus, both from Aruba, won the gold and silver medals in the girls Singles and All Events. Nicole Da Silva Teixeira earned the bronze medal in Singles, while Samantha Maaswinkel took the bronze medal in All Events.

The top 8 girls and boys from the All Events standings advanced to the Masters finals.
