Damian Gray turns tides to win The London International

When Damian Gray lost his first match against European ranking champion Paul Moor in the title match of the London International, it was all odds against a Gray victory as no player has previously been able to turn the tide. Gray was the only undefeated player in the double-elimination format and had to be defeated twice in the final. In the decider, Gray sealed the victory with two 230-plus games while Moor, who averaged 229,63 in the finals including a 300-game vs. Tore Torgersen, hat "only" two 220s, 476-450.

The London International - Championship Match
To say the first game was an anti-climax would be to understate the case - Paul Moor drilled in 238, which could have been even more and Damian Gray shot just 150 and was in deep trouble. And in the second game Paul was solid enough (213) that there was little chance of a recovery, though Damian did have 2 turkeys in a 201 game that gave him some hope. Even so 351-451 is comprehensive, and no player has previously been able to turn the tide.
So it was odds against a Gray victory, but a ball change and three in a row, while Paul went spare, spare, strike, open (baby split) gave him heart to carry on. And he did. 9 spares and strikes for the rest of the game finished off with 4 in a row and Damian had a 237 game. Paul's 5-bagger put him in contention, and he could have led if not for two 7-pins in the last. A 13-pin deficit for the European ranking champion & current leader is not much to overcome.
Both players matched each other through the first six frames, shooting an identical three strikes, 9 spare, strike, 9 spare. In the seventh Damian struck, Paul 9 spare. Frame 8 was 9 spare apiece.

Game #1 Tore went spare, strike, spare, spare, turkey, 10-pin tap, and four strikes for a fairly unlucky 237. Moor started with a strike and threw 11 more all clean strikes for a perfect game - the first in the history of the stepladder and a lead of 63 pins.
Game 2 began with a Tore strike, followed by three more before another good shot left a ringing 10-pin. Moor meantime was suddenly struggling to get to the pocket. Spare, big split, then three strikes brought back to some safety. Tore doubled in 6 & 7, but was a touch and left the 4-pin in 8.
Again Moor struggled with 3 successive spares, still leaving hope for Tore. However a strike in 9 & 10 finally killed that and Moor finished with 205 to Tore's 258 - a game that could easily have been another 300. Final score: 505-495!

In game 2, Beck opened the door with a 7-pin miss, followed by 4-6-7, but missed all pins on the spare shot. Meantime Moor was going Dutch, striking on the right and only sparing on the left until he missed in frame 6 and frame 7.

Hoods sends Scammell into losers' bracket
While the top 16 seeds had an extra hours sleep, the players seeded 17-48 after qualifying faced a 3-game knockout, losers go home. After this the tournament became double elimination two-game knockout.
Top scoring from the first round was a 269 from Ricky Cheong but he couldn't continue in that vein, lost the second 211-223 and in a strike out finale Thomas Cheung beat him 195-194 to go through, 2-1. England ladies to go through included Jo Harries who will now play Steve Thornton, Lisa Gardner and Pauline Buck. Other notable losers were Indonesia Open champion Zara Glover, Nick Froggatt, both Zadel brothers and Darren Cundy.

This leaves Scammell (pictured) as number 1 seed - his 866-block is a British record for sure, and possibly a European 3-game best.
