Powers holds onto top spot at Senior Queens
04/29/08
Monday morning's final qualifying round in the United States Bowling Congress Senior Queens was less than stunning, but Sharon Powers held onto the No. 1 qualifying spot heading into the match play portion of the event.
"I bowled like ka-ka today," Powers said. "It was over- and under-reaction all morning for me, and I was trying too hard."
Finishing the 15-game qualifying portion of the event with 3,022 pins - 39 pins ahead of Linda Carter of Rockford, Ill. - netted Powers a $225 bonus as high qualifier. But she was quickly ready to forget qualifying and settle into the three-game, double-elimination match play finals.
"I'm going to try to get my mental game into match play readiness and do the best I can," she said. "I enjoy match play. It brings out your killer instinct. You don't have to look around and figure out what you need to do. You don't have to worry about what anyone else is doing. Just play your own game."
Powers and the 30 other high qualifiers will join defending champion Lucy Sandelin in the match play eliminations Monday afternoon and Tuesday. The title and $3,000 top prize will be decided at 10 a.m. (EDT) on Wednesday.
