Carcagente eyes second year on Junior Team USA at Junior Gold Championships

2008JuniorGoldMichelleCarcagente.jpg Michelle Carcagente remembers vividly the pain she suffered as she went through in the final rounds of last year's United States Bowling Congress Junior Gold Championships.

Struck by tendinitis in her throwing arm, Carcagente's focus quickly turned from the fact that she was within striking distance to win the event to simply staying among the top five which automatically earned spots on Junior Team USA.

"I had no feeling in my right arm whatsoever," said Carcagente, who finished second last year by 148 pins to Jenny Brown. "People were coming up to me and talking about how I had a chance to win, but it really wasn't about that for me. I just wanted to make Junior Team USA and have a chance to wear red, white and blue.

"The good news is that I've got the tendinitis under control now. We changed the pitches in my bowling equipment and that has helped a lot. I also got on some medication to loosen the muscles and it's not nearly as bad as it was last year."

The desire to make Junior Team USA again is what is motivating Carcagente at the 2008 Junior Gold Championships in suburban Detroit. After getting off to a strong start and leading the girls division with 1,371 after the opening six-game block, she struggled a bit in the second round at Century Bowl, totaling just 1,104, but is still near the top of the leaderboard.

"Again it's not so much about winning as it is making the team," said Carcagente, 22, of Palm Bay, Fla. "Even though it's my last year bowling this event, and I'm too old to bowl any of the Junior Team USA events, I want to be able to say I made the team twice. Not many people can say that."

Carcagente will get her chance to bowl for her country this month when she competes in the 2008 World Tenpin Bowling Association World Youth Championships in Orlando, Fla.

"I'm really using this week as practice," Carcagente said. "I'm making sure my equipment is in line and my game is where it needs to be."

Carcagente pocketed her big first-round total at Sterling Lanes, which has proven to be the highest scoring of the three bowling centers being used for qualifying this week.

2008JuniorGoldTommySmith.jpg The boys leader, Tommy Smith of DesPlains, Ill., also competed at Sterling Lanes on Monday and shot 1,424. He managed just 1,185 in the second round at Century Bowl.

"I knew people might be watching today after how I bowled yesterday, but I just tried not to think about it," said Smith, who plans to bowl collegiately for Lindenwood next season. "I try to listen to my iPod while I'm bowling anyway because it helps me focus shot after shot and keep me from looking too far ahead. I just have to take it frame by frame and live with the results."

The 11th annual Junior Gold Championships, which is being held at Sunnybrook Lanes, Sterling Lanes and Century Bowl, features a field of nearly 1,500 of the best youth bowlers in the country competing for $100,000 in scholarships and spots on Junior Team USA.

The top four finishers who are U.S. citizens in the male and female divisions will earn automatic spots on Junior Team USA, serving as United States representatives in international competition in 2009. The National Selection Committee will choose four additional Junior Gold competitors, two males and two females, to join the 2009 team.

Qualifying continues Wednesday with the last of three six-game qualifying rounds. After 18 games, the top 105 males and 57 females (including all ties) will advance to the semifinals.

The semifinalists bowl 12 additional games on Thursday to determine the top 16 males and top 16 females who compete in the finals. The remaining bowlers compete in 16 games of match play Friday with the top male and top female declared U.S. Junior Amateur champions.
