Ivonne and Thomas Gross come up big in Austrian National Championships

    Couple qualifies for ECI

    Thomas_and_Ivonne_Gross_5173.jpg For the first time since they are married, Ivonne and Thomas Gross won the women's and men's individual national titles in the same year. The couple established three national records en route to win the 2005 Austrian National Championships at Plus Bowling in Vienna, Austria. They will represent Austria at the European Cup for Individuals in Germany in September.

    Ivonne set two Austrian records en route to defend the women's title at the 2005 Austrian National Championships at Plus Bowling in Vienna. She shot the highest 9-game total of both men and women in the semifinals with 2155, an average of 239,44, to lead the women's division by more than 300 pins.

    In the match play finals starting at scratch, the Austrian international had a high game of 279 and a low game of 192 to win eight of her ten matches and finish with 2269 pinfall total. Her record 2189, 10-game scratch was mere 16 pins better the 2173 from Eveline Norzt. Norzt (left), who went 4-6 in match play, finished second with 2213. Third place belonged to Gabi Loos (right), who defeated youth bowler Petra Grundschober, 203-197, in the position round to secure the bronze medal.

    Thomas won his fourth national championship since the year 2000 (he finished 6th when his wife won the 2004 championships) with record performance. He used high games of 269 and 278 to win all but one of his 12 matches in the match play finals. His 2818 scratch total topped the 2814-record of defending champion Fritz Kern Jr. by 4 pins. With 2928 overall, Thomas led second-place finisher Walter Gonaus (left, 2872) by 25 pins. Georg Spacal (right) leaped from fifth to third place in the position round Thanks to a 233-score. His 2587 total topped Leo Grundschober's 2586 be mere 1 pin. Grundschober rolled a 300-game in the semi-finals to tie the national record for one game.
