Casino secures women's title in final frame

Austrian internationals Thomas Gross and Thomas Tybl and multiple German champion Achim Grabowski dominated the men's Austrian National Trios Championship and cruised to victory with record performance. In the women's division, Irene Kohlhofer, Monika Schmotz and Luzia Ziegler secured the title in the very last frame.

10 men's and 8 women's trios competed in two match play rounds over two days at bowling centers Floridsdorf and Plushalle in Vienna, Austria. A winning team received two points for each win. The team with the highest point total was declared champion while ties were broken by higher total pinfall.

2006AUTTriosTyblGrabowskiGross.jpg L-R Tybl, Grabowski and Gross (Team Unistahl 1) played in their own league. The trio won all 18 matches en route to claim the gold medal with 6147 18-game total, an average of 221,31.

After averaging 214,96 for the first day in Floridsdorf, Unistahl 1 had a comfortable six-point lead heading into the final nine games at Plushalle, home of the Vienna Open, the 18th stop of the 2006 European Bowing Tour (Oct. 17-22).

The trio cruised to victory by setting a new Austrian record for nine games with 6147 pinfall total and an average of 227,67. The trio broke the old record by 294 pins. Gross led the way with a 229,50 average for 18 games, followed by Grabowski with 222,94 and Tybl 211,50.

The second team from Unistahl completed the triumph by capturing the silver medal. Niki Schröder, Walter Terc and Martin Pfeifer were tied with team Etoile at 22 points but had the higher overall average (197,98 to 191,33). Etoile had to settle for the bronze medal.

2006AUTTriosCasino.jpg The dominance of Unistahl 1 in the men's division was in sharp contrast to the nail-biting women's finale. After 13 out of 14 matches Unistahl 1 with Thomas Gross' wife Ivonne, Gabi Loos and Ingrid Lilg and team Casino with Irene Kohlhofer, Monika Schmotz and Luzia Ziegler (front row from the right) were tied at 22 points.

As both trios were 1-2 after the first day, they faced each other in the 14th and final match. It was a title match that was decided in the final frame.

Working on a double Loos and Kohlhofer struck out and while Lilg and Ziegler spared in their 10th frame to keep the hopes alive for both teams. When anchor players Gross and Schmotz got up, Casino led by the closest possible margin, 505-504.

Both players were working on a double and both failed to strike in the 10th frame. Schmotz secured a 574-572 victory and the title for Casino with a spare and a strike. Unistahl finished in second position with Tyrolia 1 another two pints behind in third place.
