Dominic Barrett starts 2011 with victory in 31st AIK International Tournament

2010 European Bowling Tour ranking champion Dominic Barrett, England (left) started the year 2011 with victory in the 31st AIK International Tournament held at Bowl-O-Rama in Stockholm, Sweden from Jan. 2-6, 2010.
The tournament was the first stop of the 2011 Swedish Super Six Tour. In the title match, Barrett defeated hometown favorite and defending champion Tomas Leandersson, 224-217.
"I struggled during the qualifications and needed all three re-entries to make the cut, but I learned a lot during those games and was much more comfortable in the finals," said Barrett.
Using a slightly different format, the Super Six finals now include 40 players with the top 8 qualifiers directly advancing to the second round.
The top 4 players after the third round advance to the stepladder finals. Joining Barrett and Leandersson in the stepladder in Stockholm were Swede Tommy Wendel and Finnish shooting star Perttu Jussila.
In the first match Wendel defeated 19-year-old Jussila, 225-214, to set up a semifinal match against Barrett. The Englishman started with nine consecutive strikes but still needed a strike on the first ball of the tenth frame to shut out Wendel who was working on a seven-bagger. Barrett struck on the first ball to seal the win, 289-244.
"I knew that Tommy (Wendel) played extremely well on the fresh oil so I needed a very good game. Fortunately I was able to put it together when I needed it", said Barrett.
In the title match against top seeded Leandersson, the Swedish icon hold a 12-pin lead after five frames, but tides turned when Barrett connected for four strikes in frames 6-9. When Leandersson failed to strike on his second ball in the tenth frame, Barrett needed just to mark in his last frame to wrap up the title.
Barrett almost left a pocket 7-10 split but was fortunate that the 10-pin fell late. He spared the 7-pin to claim the 40 000 SEK top prize (approx. US$5,825). Leandersson received 25 000 SEK for second place, Wendel got 15 000 SEK for thiurd and Jussila pocketed 10 000 SEK for fourth place. Pictured left, from left Leandersson, Barrett, Wendel and Jussila. In the new Super Six format the top 3 women are awarded extra prizes. They were Finnish 16-year-old Roosa Lundén, Isabelle Hultin and Malin Glendert (pictured right, r-l).
Immediately following the stepladder finals of the AIK Tournament were the finals of the 2010 Super Six Tour which were contested in a unique shoot-out format. Six players qualified for the men's Super Star finals and the VBS Ladies Tour finals, respectively. The player with the most strikes out of nine attempts was declared the winner.
Swedish women's national team members Rebecka Larsen Jr. (left) and Helén Johnson were deadlocked after nine frames with seven strikes each. Larsen struck on her next shot to win the VBS Ladies Tour shoot-out for the first time in her career, worth 40 000 SEK.
In the men's Super Star final three players, Mikael Roos, Martin Paulsson and Tomas Leandersson, were tied with four strikes after seven frames. Roos (right) went on to strike in the 8th and 9th frame to cruise to the title also worth 40 000 SEK.
