Asa Larsson appointed coach of the Swedish women's national team

Asa Larsson is back in the international spotlight of the sport of bowling, but not as a player. The 43-year-old former Swedish international has been appointed coach of the Swedish women's national team.
Larsen has won numerous titles and FIQ medals during her career. Highlights were the team gold medal in the 1983 World Championships in Caracas, the victory in the 1991 AMF World Cup in Bejing, the gold medals in Masters (1985) and All-Events (1993) in the European Championships, her two titles in the European Cup for Individuals, both in 1994, and the silver medal in the FIQ Atlanta Bowling Challenge during the 1996 Olympic Games. In the same year, Larsen was elected into the World Bowling Writers International Bowling Hall of Fame.
"I hope I can contribute with my experience I gained during my international career. I know what it takes to reach that level and I always gave 110 per cent to be a winner", Asa said.
Although she finished her career in the national team in 1996, she was still playing tournaments from time to time. She won the Les Lion Cup in 1999 and until this year she wasn't sure if she really gave up her career as a bowler. "But now it's over. I love bowling and will continue to play, but it will be on my own conditions", she said.
The 43-year-old mother of two sons has to work with bowling on a daily basis as she and her husband Kjell are the owners of an 8-lane center in Tranas, a small town in the southern part of Sweden.
She admits that she doesn't she wasn't 100 per cent up-to-date about the Swedish women's bowling, but she is thrilled about the possibilities. "It is enough to look at what Malin (Glendert) and Rebecka (Larsen) did in the Super Six recently and how well Helen (Johnsson) played in the World Cup", Asa said.
Her first selection of Team Sweden will come in about a month when the Super Series in Kungsbacka concludes the 2005 European Bowling Tour.
Sten-Ake Nilsson, chairman of the Swedish Bowling Federation's elite committee, is happy with the Larsson signing. "I believe this is a good solution for Sweden's women bowling. We will sign a contract through the European Championships 2006, but we are aiming at a long-term relationship with Asa", he said.
