Christine van Boom wins DVA Open One-Ball Tournament
11/22/05
The DVA Open is a unique tournament in which every player has to bowl with just one bowling ball. Thanks to the sponsorship of Columbia, the players were using the Columbia Scout this year.
The tournament was held at Dolfijn Bowling in Tilburg, November 16-20, 2005. All players had to bowl four games qualification with women receiving 8 pins handicap per game. 64 players advanced to the double-elimination finals over two game total pinfall. Those 64 finalists were the top 25 with the highest 4 game total, the top 15 with the highest two-game sets (game 1-2 or 3-4), the top 12 with the highest games and the top 12 players of the 2004 DVA Open.
The remaining two players in the winners' round were seeded 1 and 2 (based on average) in the three-player stepladder finals. In the opening match, the No. 2 seed faced the winner of the losers' round. Both matches over one game.
Deja-vu for Johnny Spil, who lost to Christine van Boom of Belgium in the penultimate winner's round, 475-377, but survived a four-player shoot-out to advance as the winner of the loser's bracket. Spil met van Boom in the semifinal just to lose again, 223-207, and settle for third place. In the championship match between the two undefeated players, van Boom once again didn't need the 8-pin handicap and cruised to a 222-206 victory over former Dutch international Erwin Groen.
