Fourth seeded Frost/Hedley defeat two Russian Doubles to claim first gold medal

2011EYCBethanyHedleyHannahFrost.jpg2011EYCMargaritaVerkhovaPolinaKosianova.jpgHannah Frost and Bethany Hedley (pictured left, r-l) of England started the 24th European Youth Championships Monday at Dream-Bowl Palace in Unterföhring near Munich, Germany, with victory in the Girls Doubles competition.

The English girls, who earned the last spot for the playoffs after finishing the six-game preliminaries in fourth place with 2398 (199.83 average), topped both Russian duos on their way to title.

In the opening shootout match, Frost (193) and Hedley (217) easily eliminated top seeded Margarita Verkhova (171) and Polina Kosiakova (183; pictured right, l-r), 410-354, to advance to the title match. Verkhova/Kosiakova led all 31 doubles after the prelims with 2489 and an average of 207.42.

The title match was decided in the very last frame. Korobkova, who has won bronze in the 2011 EYC Doubles, needed to mark in her tenth frame to wrap up the title. However, she left the 1-2-4-6-10 washout and failed to convert it to hand the gold medal to the English girls, 363-357.

Kryl/Korobkova had to settle for the silver medal while Verkhova/Kosiakova and Pasanen/Lundén shared the bronze medal.

Competition continues on Tuesday, April 19, with the Boys Doubles. The girls will return on Wednesday, April 20, for the first block of the four-player team event.

2011EYCLogo_small.jpgThe EYC 2011 is divided in two divisions - boys and girls. Each team consists of maximum four male and four female players, who must not have reached the age of 19 before August 31st, 2011.

Players compete for gold, silver and bronze medals in Singles, Doubles, Teams, All Events (18 games) and Masters (top 24 in All Events, single-elimination, best-of-three games) on a 40-feet sport compliant oil pattern (pdf file). Competition ends on Sunday, April 24, with the Boys and Girls Masters match play.
