The 2011 World Tenpin Bowling Association Women's World Championships will be held from Sept. 2-11, 2011 in Hong Kong, China. It is the fourth World Championships for women only since the WTBA Congress decided to split the quadrennial World Championships into a biennial men's and women's event.

The first WWC took place in Aalborg, Denmark in 2005 (214 players from 40 countries) and was followed by Monterrey, Mexico in 2007 (225/43) and Las Vegas in 2009 (228/45). The 2011 WWC will be hosted by the Hong Kong Tenpin Bowling Congress.

 

According to WTBA Playing Rule 4.6.3 "Two lane conditions shall be selected with two distinct styles from two of the three oiling pattern categories. A bank of patterns shall be available to the Technical Delegate by the Technical Committee Chairperson. The bank shall consist of 3-4 patterns in each of 3 oiling pattern categories - Short (33'-36'), Medium (37'-41') and Long (42'-47'). The categories selected shall be announced at least 2 months in advance of the tournament."

Kegel's John Janawicz (pictured right), the WTBA Technical Delegate for the 2011 WWC, has now decided the two oiling pattern categories to be used in Hong Kong: long and medium.

According to WTBA Playing Rule 4.6.5 the specific patterns will be announced at the Team Managers Meeting (TMM) on Thursday, Sept 1st and shall be circulated to all member federations.

Note: The patterns used for the unofficial practice prior to the TMM shall not be the official championship patterns.

Maximum six women per country will compete for gold, silver and bronze medals in six disciplines: Singles, Doubles, Trios, 5-player Team, All Events and Masters.

29 countries out 40 that have intended to participate have sent the entry forms to the organizing committee:
Australia, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Colombia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Dominican Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Indonesia, Israel, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Russia, Scotland, Singapore, Sweden, Chinese Taipei, Thailand, Ukraine, United States of America, Venezuela and the host country of Hong Kong, China

13 countries are members of the European Tenpin Bowling Federation (ETBF), 10 from the Asian Bowling Federation (ABF) and 6 only from the Pan American Bowling Confederation (PABCON).

The extended deadline for the confirmation of participation ends on Friday, July 15th, 2011.

Vivien Lau (pictured left), HKTBC President and Honorary Life President of the Asian Bowling Federation, has been awarded the Bronze Bauhinia Star (BBS) by the Hong Kong SAR Government for her contribution to sport and development and promotion of tenpin bowling.

A series of promotional activities will be organized around August in Hong Kong to create awareness of the event as the HK Government has given the Women's World Championships the "M" mark branding. The "M" logo indicates "Mega Events" in the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Hong Kong National Olympic Committee which are subvented by the Major Sports Events Committee under the Sports Commission of the HKSAR.

The 2011 WWC will be contested in bowling center Hong Kong Bowling City at EMAX mall in Kowloon Bay, Hong Kong. The 48-laner opened its doors in 2008 and has hosted international tournaments and championships since such as the 20th Asian Championships, the annual Hong Kong International Open and the Hong Kong ABF Tour leg.

The competition will be staged on two different lane condition selected by the WWC technical delegate from a bank of WTBA oil patterns. You find the patterns here.

Singles and Doubles will be contested on one oil pattern, while Trios and Team will feature both oil patterns (3 games on each pattern). The Masters will be staged on dual lane condition (one lane dressed with short oil, the other with long oil)

The top four players and teams after six games in Singles, Doubles, Trios and Team, respectively, will advance to the semifinals. The No. 1 meet No. 4 and No. 2 takes on No. 3. The winners will determine the world champion, while losers will share the bronze medal. All matches are single-game matches

The official Women's World Championships logo was designed by William Chan of "William Chan Design". The innovative and well-know artist designed the banners and posters for the Equestrian event of the 2008 Beijing Olympics held in Hong Kong and the Dance Sports Competition of the 5th Hong Kong East Asian Games.

Chan also designs all the Hong Kong Open posters and banners as well as the posters for all the official Asian championships that were hosted in Hong Kong.
