In addition to competing on the PBA Tour and dominating this year's PBA World Series of Bowling, PBA star Sean Rash (pictured) also hosts an annual youth tournament in his former home state of Alaska.
The event started in 1996 as a way to supplement the annual Coca-Cola Youth Championships that, for many years, was the only major scratch bowling event in the state.
"I started this event because the only scratch event in Alaska was the Coca-Cola Youth Championships. I wanted young players to have a chance to tune up their game in preparation for Coca-Cola because if you won that tournament, you won an entry into the Coca-Cola National event," said Rash.
The format for the tournament is six games of qualifying, then the field is cut to the top half. Qualifiers then drop pins and move into a Swiss-style match play with 20 bonus pins per win. The top half the field bowls four games of match play which is a position round every round. After the four games, there is a cut to the top five for the stepladder finals. All five spots in the finals (as well as the top female) are paid scholarships.
The event has paid out over $24,000 in scholarships since it began and also offers a number of door prizes, including autographed items from select PBA players. Every participant who enters receives a raffle ticket with their paid entry.
Rash added, "Hosting this event in Alaska where I grew up and in the bowling center I started at, Jewel Lake Bowl, means a ton. Although I do not live there anymore, it shows me that Jewel Lake Bowl still cares about our youth and the competitive side of bowling."
The event is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, December 27 at Jewel Lake Bowl in Anchorage and Rash is flying there the day before to attend. For more information on the event, contact the bowling center at 907-248-2634 or Diana Rash at 907-250-7688.
