Baek Seung-Ja, Gye Min-Young and Lee Su-Jeong (pictured left, l-r) toppled 1897 pins (210.78 average) on the medium oil pattern Thursday in Hong Kong to help defending champion Korea grab the lead in the Women's Trios event at the 22nd Asian Championships.
Gye led the team with 649 with Baek and Lee close behind at 627 and 621, respectively. The Koreans have a 23-pin cushion over Malaysia heading into the second block on short oil Friday.
World champions Esther Cheah, Zandra Aziela and Shalin Zulkifli (pictured right, l-r) finished with a huge 707 game to sit in second place with 1874 total (208.22).
Third place belonged to a trio from Down-under. Rebecca Whiting, two-time world champion Ann-Maree Putney and Lexi Nicoll (pictured left, l-r) had games of 611, 625 and 617 for 1853 (205.89).
The Trios from Singapore, Cherie Tan, Shayna Ng and Jazreel Tan on one side and New Hui-Fen, Amanda Ng and Daphne Tan on the other side, were tied for fourth place with 1852 (205.78).
They were followed by both trios from Chinese Taipei (1836 and 1825) and China (1802), who all surpassed the 1800-mark.
Singles champion Sin Li-Jane of Malaysia and Korea's Doubles champion Kim Moon-Jeong maintained the lead in All Events after 15 of 24 games with 3258 (217.20) and 3240 (216.00), respectively. Cherie Tan, Singapore, used 637 series to leap one spot into third place with 3172 (211.47).
The players are done for today and will return Friday at 9.10 a.m. and 1.20 p.m. local time for the second block on the short oil pattern.
The 22nd Asian Championships will be contested on two oil pattern - a 36 ft. short pattern and a 41 ft. medium pattern, which will be conditioned by Kegel using the battery powered Kustodian ION Sport Model. Lane conditioner and lane cleaner of choice for the championships are Infinity and Defense C.
Men and women compete in separate divisions for gold, silver and bronze medals in six disciplines: Singles, Doubles, Trios, five-player Teams, All Events and Masters.
Singles (six games on short oil) and Doubles (six games on long oil) will be contested on one oil pattern, while Trios and Team will feature both oil patterns (three games on each pattern). The players and teams with the highest pinfall total after six games will be declared the champions.
The top 16 players in All Events (24 games; individual pinfall total in Singles, Doubles, Trios and Team event) will advance to the Masters finals which will be played on dual lane condition.
The All Events standings will also determine the Asian qualifiers for 2013 Combined World Championships in Las Vegas, USA, as well as the 2013 World Games in Cali, Colombia.
The top 12 countries in each gender with the highest All Events total of the top five players will qualify for the men's and women's division of the World Championships. The top eight countries with the highest All Events total of the top five men plus the top five women qualify for the World Games.
