No changes atop the leaderboard in Viernheim Open

Kai Virtanen.jpg The 24th qualifying squad of the 2nd Gutperle Viernheim Open 2006 presented by Storm didn't bring major changes in the standings. Kai Virtanen (left) from Finland, a World Cup and World Games Champion, felled 1364 pins, an average of 227,33 over six games, on Thursday evening at Bowling Center Viernheim, to move into 10th place in the overall standings.

Peter_Ljung_5425.jpg Peter Ljung (right) from Sweden continued to lead the field of 340 players with 1419 and an average of 236,50. Jesper Agerbo, Denmark, was second with 1408. Third and fourth place belonged to Vincent Cayez, France (1405) and Rainer Puisis, Germany (1404). Rounding out the top five is 11-time PWBA champion Liz Johnson, United States, who totaled 1394 including 48 pins handicap.

German, English and Dutch national team members Dirk Dreyer (left), Nick Froggatt (right) and Ron van den Bogaard positioned themselves among the top 20 (14th-16th place with scores of 1356, 1348 and 1346.

Two-time defending European Ranking champion Britt Bröndsted, Denmark, is 21st with 1335. Canadian Mark Buffa had 1317, good enough for 30th place.

Achim_Grabowski_5299.jpg With five more squads to go - four on Friday and the last squad on Saturday morning - Achim Grabowski (left) of Germany, runner-up in the Masters competition at the Men's Worlds in Korea, is the "man on the bubble". Grabowski currently is in 58th position with 1274 pinfall total and an average of 212,33.

The winner will receive the huge 25.000 Euro first-place check (approx. $31,700).

Qualifying continues through Saturday, September 16, and concludes with the one-game 'Desperado Squad' at 12.30. The top 58 qualifying leaders plus the top 6 'Desperados' (seeded 59-64) will advance to the semi-final and bowl eight games starting from scratch to cut to the top 40 for the single-elimination best-of-three-games finals.

Squad 23: Ljung overtakes lead in Viernheim; Voss shoots second perfecto


2005EBT15PeterLjung.jpg Peter Ljung (left) from Sweden had a high game of 279 and a low game of 215 en route to overtake the lead in the 2nd Gutperle Viernheim Open 2006 presented by Storm with 1419 six-game total and an average of 236,50. Jesper Agerbo, Denmark, fell one spot to second with 1408.

Ljung and Agerbo are two of many players here in Viernheim who are just back from the Men's World Championships in Korea.

Joining those two in the illustrious 1400-club are Vincent Cayez, France (1405) and Rainer Puisis, Germany (1404), who sit in third and fourth place, respectively. Rounding out the top five is one of the best woman bowlers in the world, Liz Johnson, United States. Johnson, an 11-time titlist on the Professional Women's Bowling Association, totaled 1394 including 48 pins handicap.

The PBA Hall of Famer rolled 12 consecutive strikes for the second 300-game of the tournament (Robert Andersson, Sweden, shot the first). Voss added 198, 247, 254, 156 and 202 sit in 12th place with 1357 (226,17).

Squad 22: Agerbo and Cayez rise to the top in Viernheim Open


2006EBT15JesperAgerbo.jpg Dane Jesper Agerbo fired games of 251, 239, 200, 246, 237 and 235 in the second qualifying squad on Thursday, the 22nd overall, to rise to the top of the leaderboard in the 2nd Gutperle Viernheim Open 2006, the 15th stop of the 2006 European Bowling Tour.

Agerbo overtook previous leader Rainer Puisis, Germany, by four pins to set the pace with 1408 six-game total and an average of 234,67. Puisis slipoped to third place as Vincent Cayez, France, finished just one pin behind Agerbo. Cayez had games of 197, 253, 245, 265, 205 and 240 to move into second place with 1405 (234,17).
