Yoan Alix leads top 40 into single-elimination match play finals in Viernheim Open

2006EBT15YoanAlix.jpg Yoan Alix from France shot a huge 1949 eight-game series, an average of 243,63, to become the No. 1 seed for Sunday's single-elimination match play finals in the 2nd Gutperle Viernheim Open presented by Storm.

After a slow start (191 and 199), Alix fired games of 253, 275 and 216 before he closed out the round with an 815-series (289, 268 and 258).

The top 40 out of 64 players qualified for the single-elimination best-of-three-games match play finals on Sunday starting at 8am. The top 8 semi-final leaders will bypass the first two rounds and are guaranteed 1.300 Euro each.

Tanja Theißen is the top-ranked German in fourth position with 1857. Fifth place belonged to Pasi Uotila from Finland with 1854. Dane Jesper Agerbo (right) was sixth with 1851. Rounding out the top eight were Osku Palermaa from Finland and 11-time PWBA champion Liz Johnson with 1814.

Former Team USA member Mike Mullin took the 40th and final qualifying spot with 1660 or an average of 207,50.

The 2nd Gutperle Viernheim Open 2006 presented by STORM is the 15th stop of the 2006 European Bowling Tour and one of its "Majors". With total prize fund of 100.000 Euro or more than US$125,000 the Viernheim Open is the "richest event" on the European Bowling Tour for the second consecutive year.

The winner will walk away with the huge 25.000 Euro first-place check (approx. $31,700).

Theißen had three consecutive 250-plus games in the fifth through seventh game en route to overtake the second place with 1857. Pasi Uotila was three pins behind in third position with 1854. Fourth place belonged to Osku Palermaa, both of Finland, with 1814.

Two-time defending ranking champion Britt Bröndsted, Denmark was fifth with 1790. Austrian Michael Grabovac landed in sixth place with 1780. Two-time World Champion Martina Beckel, Germany, was seventh with 1777. Eighth place belonged to defending champion Michael Fagan, United States. The PBA exempt player finished with 237 and 269 and a 1766 total.

The top 58 of 372 players from 27 countries plus the top six from the 'Desperado Squad' advanced to the semi-final. Those 64 players were divided into two groups - players seeded 33-64 (at 2pm) and players seeded 1-32 (7pm) - to bowl eight games starting from scratch.
