Denny's PBA Tour returns to the Baltimore area for the first time since 1996
12/08/06
The Denny's PBA Tour heads to AMF Country Club Lanes in Baltimore, Md. for the 2006 Beltway Classic, Dec. 6-10. The Tour returns to the Baltimore area for the first time since 1996 when Mike Aulby won the 25th of his 27 career titles.
PBA Commissioner and CEO Fred Schreyer did not award a Commissioner's Exemption for this week's event meaning seven spots will be available for PBA members through Wednesday's Denny's PBA Tour Qualifying Round. Exempt bowler Paul Fleming will also miss this week's event as he is bowling in the Regional Players Invitational in Reno, Nev. while Amleto Monacelli also withdrew.
David Traber makes his 2006-07 debut as an exempt bowler as he replaces injured Mark Scroggins on the exempt list, the third bowler this season to defer his exemption due to an injury. Scroggins suffered a torn hamstring and will be replaced by the four-time titlist Traber, who comes into this week 67th in the PBA World Point Rankings having bowled in five of the six U.S. events this season. Traber, whose brother, Dale, is exempt, replaces Scroggins, whose twin brother, Mike, is also exempt.
Despite a 7-10 split in the 10th frame which nearly cost him the match, 2005-06 PBA Player of the Year Tommy Jones captured his ninth career title with a narrow 222-221 win over roommate Wes Malott in the 2006 Ace Hardware Championship at Freeway Lanes of Wickliffe.
After squeaking by all-time titles leader Walter Ray Williams Jr. in the semifinals in the first-ever match between the Young Gun and the Legend on TV, Jones strung together six consecutive strikes in the title match to open up a lead against Malott, who was looking for back-to-back titles.
Jones, however, left a 7-10 split in the 10th frame, giving Malott the chance to strike for the win. After leaving a 9-pin with his first ball in the 10th, Malott still had a chance to tie with a strike. He left a 2-pin this time, however, giving Jones his first win of the season.
This week's 2006 Beltway Classic at AMF Country Club Lanes features a single elimination match play format. Action begins with the Denny's PBA Tour Qualifying Round and official PBA practice session on Wednesday, Dec. 6, followed by an official Beltway Classic Pro-Am at 7 p.m. On Thursday, Dec. 7, the 64-bowler field will bowl two seven-game qualifying sessions, after which the top 32 will advance to match play.
Friday, Dec. 8, features the Rounds of 32, 16 and 8 which will whittle the field down to just four bowlers for Sunday's finals. Saturday, Dec. 9, is a day for the fans with official Beltway Classic Pro-Ams taking place at Noon, 3, 30 and 7, 30 p.m. EST at AMF Country Club Lanes.
The live ESPN televised finals will take place Sunday, Dec., 10, at 1 p.m. EST. The winner will take home the $25,000 top prize and an exemption for the 2007-08 season.
The PBA is mourning the loss of Cecil Caddel, a PBA member since 1968.
After the PBA Regional Tour program was established in 1969, Caddel became the PBA Southwest Region's second Regional Director in 1971. He held the position until 1996.
The PBA sends its deepest sympathies to the Caddel family.
Coming into this season, the top two seeds had met in a title match in the single elimination match play format just once since the format started in 2001-02. It's now happened in two consecutive events.
In the 2006 Lake County Indiana Classic, No., 1 Norm Duke defeated No., 2 Mika Koivuniemi, while last week top-seed Tommy Jones took down No., 2 Wes Malott. It would seem the stepladder format would favor top seeds more than the single elimination format, but top seeds in stepladder have lost their last eight matches.
It's been 10 years since the Denny's PBA Tour last stopped in Baltimore, the site of this week's Beltway Classic at AMF Country Club Lanes. PBA Hall of Famer Mike Aulby captured the last event held in the area, the 1996 Greater Baltimore Open, meaning a new champion will be crowned this week.
Overall, this week's event marks the 21st Tour stop in Baltimore and the third at Country Club Lanes. Exempt bowler David Traber won the first stop held at Country Club lanes in 1995, followed by Aulby in 1996. Besides Traber, three other exempt bowlers have won in Baltimore including PBA Hall of Famers Walter Ray Williams Jr. and Pete Weber. In addition, Danny Wiseman won his first career Tour title in his hometown when he captured the 1990 Fair Lanes Open at Fair Lanes-Baltimore.
Wiseman joins another Baltimore-area native, Tim Criss, as exempt bowlers looking to make the hometown fans proud.
After being shut out the first five events of the season, the "Young Guns" have been making a run the past two weeks, with 30-year-old Wes Malott and 28-year-old Tommy Jones winning the last two weeks. Jones and Malott met in the title match last week after Jones knocked off Legend Walter Ray Williams Jr. in the semifinals. The week before, Malott advanced to the title match with a win over another Legend, PBA Hall of Famer Parker Bohn III.
After a modest two-game losing streak on TV, the longest of his career since he lost his first two TV matches, last week Tommy Jones regained the form that has made him the most successful bowler on TV in Tour history.
Jones defeated Walter Ray Williams Jr. and Wes Malott last week to up his record to 26-7 in 16 TV appearances, a .788 winning percentage.
With nine career Denny's PBA Tour titles in just over two years, Jones is close to reaching an amazing milestone. Jones won his nine titles in just two years, two months and 13 days. Should he win a title in the next four months, Jones will break the record for the shortest time between his first and 10th career titles.
Dick Weber currently holds the record, having gone two years, six months and 11 days between his first and 10th titles. Weber won two of the three events in the Tour's inaugural 1959 season, just one in 1960, and five in 1961. He captured the first two events of the 1962 season for his ninth and 10th titles.
Weber did win his first 10 titles in just 23 events, a record that may never be broken.
Though Walter Ray Williams Jr. is far from finished with his career, Tommy Jones is putting himself in a position to one day chase Williams' titles record once his career comes to a close. With nine titles in just 118 events, Jones is way ahead of Williams' pace at the same point in his career. Below is a comparison of the two stars through 118 events.
PBA Commissioner and CEO Fred Schreyer (l.) awarded PBA Hall of Famer Dave Ferraro the Commissioner's Exemption for the Columbia 300 Classic next week in West Babylon, N.Y. Ferraro, who resides in Kingston, N.Y. won 10 titles in his career, including three Majors, the 1988 and 1991 Touring Players Championships and the 1990 Tournament of Champions. He had a career year in 1992, earning PBA Player of the Year honors after capturing two titles. Ferraro will come out of retirement to bowl in his home state, having ended his career abruptly in 1995 at the age of 36.
Now that he's exempt, David Traber should be the next bowler to go over the $1 million mark in career earnings as he's now guaranteed a paycheck each week.
With $997,663 in career PBA earnings (including PBA Tour and PBA Regional Tour earning), Traber can go over the $1 million in earnings if he finishes eighth this week.
Wes Malott (Ace Hardware) holds the lead in the 2006-07 PBA Sponsor Competition, thanks to his win in the 2006 Discover® Card Windy City Classic and his runner-up finish in last week's Ace Hardware Championship. After his win in Wickliffe, Ohio, last week, Tommy Jones (Denny's) moved into second.
In the three sponsored events this season – Etonic Championship, Discover® Card Windy City Classic and Ace Hardware Championship – at least one bowler from the event's sponsor team made the telecast. Pete Weber of Etonic, Jack Jurek of Discover® Card and Malott of Ace Hardware each represented their team on sponsored telecasts.

PBA Spare Shots #6
This Week
Traber, whose brother, Dale, is exempt, replaces Scroggins, whose twin brother, Mike, is also exempt.Last Week

Did You Know?
Coming into this season, the top two seeds had met in a title match in the single elimination match play format just once since the format started in 2001-02. It's now happened in two consecutive events.
In the 2006 Lake County Indiana Classic, No., 1 Norm Duke defeated No., 2 Mika Koivuniemi, while last week top-seed Tommy Jones took down No., 2 Wes Malott. It would seem the stepladder format would favor top seeds more than the single elimination format, but top seeds in stepladder have lost their last eight matches.
Back in the Beltway
Young Guns Making a Charge
After being shut out the first five events of the season, the "Young Guns" have been making a run the past two weeks, with 30-year-old Wes Malott and 28-year-old Tommy Jones winning the last two weeks. Jones and Malott met in the title match last week after Jones knocked off Legend Walter Ray Williams Jr. in the semifinals. The week before, Malott advanced to the title match with a win over another Legend, PBA Hall of Famer Parker Bohn III.
TJ Back on Target
After a modest two-game losing streak on TV, the longest of his career since he lost his first two TV matches, last week Tommy Jones regained the form that has made him the most successful bowler on TV in Tour history.Jones defeated Walter Ray Williams Jr. and Wes Malott last week to up his record to 26-7 in 16 TV appearances, a .788 winning percentage.
Chasing Walter Ray
Though Walter Ray Williams Jr. is far from finished with his career, Tommy Jones is putting himself in a position to one day chase Williams' titles record once his career comes to a close. With nine titles in just 118 events, Jones is way ahead of Williams' pace at the same point in his career. Below is a comparison of the two stars through 118 events.
| Bowler | Year | Events | Age | Titles | Majors | TV Apps. | Earnings |
| Jones | 2006 | 118 | 28 | 9 | 1 | 16 | $828,701 |
| Williams | 1986 | 118 | 26 | 2 | 0 | 9 | $201,770 |
The Rich Get Richer
Already moving up the charts on the titles list, Jones is also chasing a record in the earnings category. With his win Sunday, Jones' total career PBA earnings are up to $828,201 in 188 career PBA events (including PBA Regional Tour events) giving him a legitimate shot at Chris Barnes' record for fewest events to reach $1 million.
Barnes reached $1 million in 220 events, meaning Jones needs to earn $171,799 in 31 events to break the record, an average of $5,541 per event.
Barnes reached $1 million in 220 events, meaning Jones needs to earn $171,799 in 31 events to break the record, an average of $5,541 per event.
Regional Players Invitational This Week
The first of two Major events on the PBA Regional Tour takes place this week, the 2006 Regional Players Invitational at the National Bowling Stadium in Reno, Nev.
The event features the top eight bowlers from each of the seven PBA regions competing for the $10,000 top prize and a spot in the 2007 PBA Tournament of Champions. Awards will also be given out to the region which scores the highest throughout the event.
David Anthony won last season's RPI. One roster change was made this week as Thomas Hess will replace David Traber from the Midwest Region. Traber replaced the injured Mark Scroggins on the Denny's PBA Tour last week and chose to withdraw from the RPI.
