Swedish girls target for second gold medal at 22nd European Youth Championships

The girls from the host country Sweden target for the second gold medal in as many events in the 4-player team event in the 22nd European Youth Championships. Starting the second 3-game block in second place, Elin Adolfsson, Isabell Hultin, Joline Persson Planefors and Sandra Andersson were the only team which averaged over 200 en route to earn the No. 1 seed for the finals later today.

The Swedes, who won gold and bronze in Doubles on Tuesday, started with a 760 game to overtake Block 1 leader England by four pins and pulled away with the field-best 911 in game #2. They finished with 750 and a 2421 3-game series for 4868 pinfall total and an average of 202.83.

Overnight leaders Danielle Hopcroft, Katrina MacIver, Laura Ellis and Nikki Beard slipped to second place behind a 2316 series and total pinfall of 4783 (199.29).

Israel with Liat Vizenfeld, Mor Dayan, Shahaf Antin and Shir Levy was close behind in third place with 4779, while Finland's Jenni Styrman, Roosa Lundén, Salla Mäkelä and Sanna Pasanen remained in fourth place with 4624.

The top four teams will battle it out for the medals on Thursday evening. The No. 1 seed Sweden meets the No. 4 qualifier Finland and the No. 2 seed England takes on No. 3 Israel. The winners of that one-game match will bowl for gold while the losers will share the bronze medal.

The EYC 2009 are divided in two divisions - boys and girls. Each team consists of maximum four male and four female players, who must not have reached the age of 19 before August 31st, 2009.

The players compete for gold, silver and bronze medals in Singles, Doubles, Teams, All Events (18 games) and Masters (top 24 in All Events, single-elimination, best-of-three games).
