05/21/09
Dutch national team member Danielle van der Meer chalked up 1390 pins in the third qualifying squad Wednesday at Lovvang Bowling Center in Aalborg, Denmark, to move into fourth place in the overall qualifying standings in the Brunswick Aalborg International.
Van der Meer, who studies at the University of Nebraska, United States, and is a member of the "Huskers" bowling team, averaged 223.67 over six games on dual lane condition and added 48 pins handicap, a standard for women on the European Bowling Tour.
The top three players, however, remained unchallenged and automatically earned a spot for the finals.
Jesper Agerbo leads the field of 89 players since Squad 1 with 1502 and an average of 250.33. John Guldbäk is second after leading Squad 2 with 1455. World Ranking Masters and European Ranking champion Britt Brøndsted, all from Denmark, is the top-ranked woman in third place with 1441 including handicap.
The Brunswick Aalborg International 2009 is the 7th stop of the 2009 European Bowling Tour and one of the Tour's "Majors". The BAI will be held at Lovvang Bowling Center in Aalborg, Denmark, from May 18-24, 2009.
The total prize fund is 62.000 Euro with 10.000 Euro going to the winner. Women receive 8 pins handicap each game. As an EBT Major, there are 100 ranking points at stake for the winner of the men's and women's rankings, respectively.
The tournament is the last event that counts toward qualifying for the PBA World Series in August. The EBT has decided to give the exemption to the highest ranked player in the men's division after seven stops.
Qualifying (6 games, unlimited re-entries) runs through Saturday, May 23 with the final qualifying squad 14 scheduled for 8pm.
A total of 48 players will qualify for the finals on Sunday, May 24, the top 38 players from the overall qualifying standings plus the top three players each from a combined standing of Squads 1-3 and 4-6 which are not among the top 3, and the top 4 from the Desperado Squad.
The top 12 qualifiers will earn two byes, while players seeded 13-24 will bypass the first round of the finals.
The finals in Aalborg are a 4-game scratch contest over four round which will bring the field down to the top 4, who will determine the champion in semifinals (No. 1 vs. No. 4; No. 2 vs. No. 3) and a championship match, each over two games total pinfall.
