Williams shoots 1488 to win the Singles qualifying

2009VOClaraGuerreroStuartWilliams.jpg2009VORobThurlby3.jpgTwo World Ranking Masters champions, Clara Juliana Guerrero, Colombia, and Stuart Williams (pictured), England, joined forces in the 17th and final squad to win the Doubles of the 7th Columbia 300 Vienna Open.

PBA exempt player Williams led the duo with an outstanding 1488 series, which also propelled him atop the leaderboard in Singles, and two-time world champion Guerrero added 1307, for 2795 pinfall total. The duo will split the 1600 Euro top prize. Guerrero also made the cut to the top 52.

Williams had games of 288, 224, 225, 236, 279 and 236, an average of 248.00, to win the Singles qualifying by 74 pins. Lars Nielsen, Denmark, finished second with 1414. Williams' compatriot Rob Thurlby (above, right) had six games between 204 and 256 to land in third place with 1409.

Mikko Hirvonen, Finland, had the fourth and last 1400-plus series to take the fourth place with 1408.

Lisanne Breeschoten 1396), Netherlands; 6. David Canady (1393), Germany; 7. Dennis Eklund (1379), Sweden; and 8. PBA Hall of Famer Brian Voss, United States.

Heiko Küppers (pictured right) and Dirk Völkel (left) rolled the first two 300 games of the tournament in the second and fourth game, respectively. Völkel made easily made the cut with 1365 in 10th place while Küppers had five games between 137 and 187 to finish with 1078.

After 17 qualifying squads featuring 327 players from 27 countries, Danish national team members Britt Brøndsted and Anja Ginge Jensen were tied for 52nd and final place to advance with 1293.

Brøndsted advanced due to the higher last game, 199 to 195, Ginge, who was celebrating her 24th birthday on Saturday, had to bowl the Desperado Squad.

Joining the top 52 qualifiers in the finals were the leaders of Squad 1-6, who didn't make it among the top 52: Squad 1 - Franz Hahn, Austria (1286); Squad 2 - Mirek Cifra, Czech Republic (1269); Squad 3 - Ivonne Gross, Austria (1224); Squad 4 - Tim Friedrichs, Germany (1286), Squad 5 - Anton Stiel, Austria (1288) and Squad 6 - Michael Rauscher, Germany (1250) for leader Leo Grundschober, Austria, who made the cut with 1310.

2009VOLucasWiseman5.jpgAlso advancing to the finals were the top 6 from the one-game Desperado Squad: 1. Anders Vorborg, Denamrk, 260 2. Philipp SchĂĽtt, Germany, 257 3. Mathias Arup, Sweden, 254 4. Anne Lorraine Gales, Denmark, 247 5. Lucas Wiseman (pictured left), United States, and Erik Andersin, Sweden, both 246.

Guerrero/Williams waited until the very last moment to overtake Thomas Larsen and 15-year-Austrian youth bowler Rowby Rodriguez, who had held the lead in Doubles since Squad 10. Larsen/Rodriguez finished second with 2681. Third place belonged to Dennis Eklund, Sweden, and Tore Torgersen, Norway, with 2676. The top 20 Doubles cashed.

Bowlingdigital will provide live streaming from the final rounds on Sunday, Oct. 4 at Plus Bowling in Vienna, Austria and from the stepladder finals starting at 5pm local time.

2009ViennaOpenLogo_small.jpg The 7th Columbia 300 Vienna Open is the 11th stop of the 2009 European Bowling Tour and one of the Tour's "Majors". The tournament will be held from Tuesday Sept. 29 through Sunday Oct. 4, 2009 at the renovated 32-lane Plus Bowling in Vienna, Austria.

More than 340 players from 27 countries will compete for an increased total prize money of 68.130 Euro - 57.900 € in Singles and 10.230 € in Doubles. The singles champion will receive the 6.000 Euro top prize while the doubles winners will split 1.600.

Once again the qualifying for the Vienna Open finals is contested as a doubles tournament. Each duo rolls at least one six-game block. Unlimited re-entries with different partners are possible but each player can only cash once with the same partner.

2009VOBigiManico.jpg2009VOTanyaCuva.jpg The team with the highest total pinfall including handicap will be declared the winner (no finals will be played). The top 20 doubles will cash. Bigi Manico, Switzerland and Tanya Cuva (nee Petty) are the defending champion.

Qualifying runs from Tuesday through Saturday and ends with the ultimate one-game Desperado Squad on Saturday night Oct. 3 slated for 11.30 pm local time (GMT +1). Women receive 8 pins handicap each game, a standard on the European Bowling Tour.

 


A total of 64 players will qualify for the Vienna Open finals on Sunday, Oct.
- the top 52 players from the overall qualifying standings
- the first player each from Squad 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6, who is not among the top 52 (total 6 players)
- and the top 6 from the Desperado Squad.

The top 8 qualifying leaders will bypass the first round of the finals.

The other 52 players will bowl 6 games starting from scratch to cut to the top 22, who will join the top qualifiers in Round Two.

Those 30 players will bowl another 6 games starting from scratch after which the field will be trimmed to the top 18, who will carry their pinfall forward into Round Three. After another 6-game block the top 4 with the highest 12-game total will advance to the stepladder finals.

The No. 4 seed meets the No. 3 in the opening match and the winner takes on the No. 2 seed for the right to bowl the top seed for the title, 100 ranking points and the 6.000 Euro top prize.
