First gold medal for Korean women in Trios event at 21st Asian Championships

    Short-oil leader Malaysia moves into second place; Japan earns bronze medal

    2011AsCW3GyeMinYoungShinBoHyunSonYunHee.jpgSon Yun-Hee, Shin Bo-Hyun and Gye Min-Young (r-l) captured the first gold medal for the Korean women's team at the 21st Asian Championships and the third gold medal for Korea overall by winning the Women Trios event Thursday morning at Khalifa Bowling Center in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

    The Koreans, who had a 63-pin lead over Singapore after the first 3-game block on medium oil, rolled the second-highest 1869 series on short oil to win the title with 3851 pinfall total and an average of 213.94.

    Yun-Hee led the team with the field-best 1383 six-game series (230.50 average) and was followed by Min-Young with 1296 and Bo-Hyun with 1172.

    Malaysia's Zatil Iman, Siti Shazwani and Jacqueline Sijore led the field of 18 trios on short oil with 1962 including games of 611, 665 and 686, the highest game of the day, to leap from fifth to second place en route to earn the silver medal with 3821 (212.28).

    Sijore led the team with 1344, Shazwani had 1291 including 721 on short oil, the highest series of all competitors, and Iman added 628.

    Japan's Misaki Mukotani (1269), Haruka Matsuda (1258) and Kanako Ishimine (1232) used the third-highest 1865 series on Thursday to maintain their third place and to earn the bronze medal with 3559 (208.83).

    Trailing the bronze medalists by 100 pins to tie for fourth place at 3659 (203.28) were Indonesia's Novie Phang, Sharon Limansantoso and Putty Armein as well as Malaysia's Dayang Khairuniza, Siti Safiyah Amirah and Hee Kar Yen.

    2011AsCW1HwangSunOk2.jpgKorea's Hwang Sun-Ok (pictured left) maintained a slim seven-pin lead in All Events after 18 out of 24 games (combined results of Singles, Doubles, Trios and Team) with 3976 and an average of 220.89. Siti Shazwani, Malaysia, moved from fifth to second place with 3969. Daphne Tan slipped one spot to third place with 3959. Son Yun-Hee, Korea, is fourth with 3938.

    The 62 women from 12 countries - Australia, Bahrain, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and UAE - will return Friday for the five-player Team event (first block on short oil, second block on medium oil).

    The top 16 in All Events (total 24 games) will advance to the Masters finals, which will conclude the 21st Asian Championships on Saturday and Sunday.
