    11/21/06

    41st QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup

Gladiator Bowling Center in Ljubljana, Slovenia

Tournament leader Michael Schmidt of Canada started his third six-game block in the 41st QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup with games of 257, 194 and 210. The 25-year-old right-hander from Winnipeg, Manitoba, needed a final 697 three-game series to beat the 4229-score Norwegian Petter Hansen had set in Squad B on Wednesday afternoon and to retain the lead.

"I felt a little more nervous than the other two days. It helped a lot to have a coach (Sandy Lowe) here." Schmidt said "I just wanted to get back into that good feeling."

Schmidt was able to relax and closed out game four with eleven strikes in a row for 290. He was perfect with his first eight shots in game five before finishing with a 269 game. A final 216-game brought him to a 775 three-game set and strongest round of the day with 1436.

Schmidt held on to the lead with a grand total of 4308 pins, an average of 239,33 over 18 games. Hansen remained in second place with 4229 and Belgium's Gery Verbruggen remained third with 4121.

Tyrone Ongpauco of the Philippines (4th/3958) and Lucas Legnani of Argentina (5th/3951) overtook Anders Öhman of Sweden, who fell two spots to sixth with 3944. Seventh place belonged to Arturo Hernandez of Venezuela with 3933. Rounding out the top 8 is Alan Bride of Ireland with 3900.

With the final six-game block to go on Thursday at 3 p.m. (Squad A) and 7 p.m. (Squad B), Dominic Lim Zhong of Singapore mans the 24th and final qualifying spot with 3745 pinfall total and or an average of 208,06. The top 24 after 24 games will return on Friday for another 8-game block to cut to the top 8 for the single elimination finals in best-of-three games format.

Petter Hansen ends third round in men's QubicaAMF World Cup with 289

Norwegian Petter Hansen posted his second consecutive 1400-plus series during the third six-game block at the 41st QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup. Hansen felled 1428 pins including a 289 in the last game en route to a 4229 pinfall total, an average of 234,94 over 18 games.

Hansen (pictured on the right), who finished second in last year's World Cup, started game six with ten in a row before a 4-pin ended his dream for his second 300-game in a World Cup. The first came in Singapore last year.

"The left lane (19) was a little slower than the right lane," said his coach and former Norwegian international Erik Garder (pictured left). "The strike in the 10th was almost ok but not perfect and we decided to move a little to the left. Petter made a good shot in the 11th frame but he didn't carry. However, our target was a 260-game to crack the 4200-bar and he did it. We are very satisfied."

Anders Öhman of Sweden couldn't match his vigorous pace he maintained on Tuesday. The 3-time World Champion from Malaysia 2003 started with three sub 200-games but ended up strong for 1280. Öhman is second in Squad B with 3944 trailing Hansen by 285 pins. Arturo Hernandez from Venezuela is third with 3933 behind a 1358 series today.

Alan Bride of Ireland (pictured) posted the second-highest 1358 series en route to move into fourth place with 3900. Leonidas Maragos of Greece is close behind in fifth with 3891.

Rhino Page was 152 over today and leaped into sixth place with 3864. However, the U.S. National Amateur Champion was extremely disappointed. "I played the lanes right, I made the right choices, but I wish I would have executed better," said the 22-year-old lefthander. "I expect myself to perform much better tomorrow bowling wise, the scores will come with that."

Men's Squad A will end another long day here at Gladiator Bowling Center in Ljubljana, Slovenia. The players from 83 countries will return on Thursday at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. for the fourth and final six-game block before the cut to the top 24.
