England's Stuart Williams (pictured left) rolled 268 and 269 games out of the starting block and held on for the first round lead in the Professional Bowlers Association's Badger Open at FireLake Bowling Center Wednesday.

Williams, the first English bowler to win a PBA Tour title (2011 Viper Open during PBA World Series of Bowling III), averaged 238.67 for six games on the long 52-foot Badger lane conditioning pattern for a 1,432 pinfall total and an 11-pin lead over Tom Daugherty (right) of Wesley Chapel, Fla., to lead the top 18 players into Wednesday evening's second qualifying round.

With his big Badger round, Daugherty led the field of 18 players who qualified for the Oklahoma Open, based on their three six-game rounds in the Wolf, Bear and Badger Opens. Three rounds of match play in the Oklahoma Open will be contested Thursday at FireLake with the top five advancing to the stepladder finals Sunday at noon at the Grand Events Center.

"I had 60 clean frames today. That was a novelty," Williams said after his round. Williams said he came into Oklahoma's Grand Casino Resort PBA Summer Swing with bittersweet emotions.

He had just learned of his election into the UK Tenpin Hall of Fame (induction ceremonies will be held in October), and he and wife Tina (Stickney), a former collegiate star for Texas A&M, had just returned from England where they had planned a second wedding ceremony on behalf of Williams' ailing grandmother, who was unable to travel to the U.S. for the couple's original wedding last year. But Williams' 89-year-old grandmother died before the ceremony could be held.

"I had very little practice because of that, but I won a local tournament on this same lane condition in Tucson which gave me some confidence knowing moves I was going to make here," he said.

"I'd really like to win my second title. There are a lot of people who have won one title; there aren't so many who have more than one. You want to prove it wasn't a fluke."

The top 18 players in the Badger Open advanced to the second qualifying round at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. Behind Williams and Daugherty were Brian Valenta (left), Lockport, Ill.; Anthony Lavery-Spahr, Pasadena, Texas, and Marshall Kent (right), Yakima, Wash., all tied at 1,402.

The top five after 12 games will compete for the Badger Open title Saturday on the special lane installation at the Grand Event Center.

The Oklahoma Open match play rounds will be held Thursday at 10 a.m., 2 and 6:30 p.m. The top five players based upon a total of 36 games, including match play bonus pins, will bowl for the Oklahoma Open title Sunday at the Grand Event Center.

Daugherty averaged 227.33 across the three lane conditions for a 4,092 total. Bill O'Neill (left), Langhorne, Pa., was second with 4,088 pins followed by Mike Fagan (right), Ft. Worth, Texas, at 4,069; Bear Open qualifying leader Tommy Jones, Simpsonville, S.C., at 4,054, and Mika Koivuniemi, Hartland, Mich., with 4,031 pins.

Thursday's three six-game Oklahoma Open match play rounds will be covered live on PBA's online bowling channel, Xtra Frame.
