Dick Allen takes first round lead in PBA Cheetah Championship

    10/26/14

    2014 PBA Tour #7

Top 24 advance to second round in the opening event of the GEICO PBA World Series of Bowling VI

201213PBADickAllen2.jpg2014PBAJasonSterner.jpgDick Allen (pictured left) of Columbia, South Carolina, averaged 252.71 for his first seven games to take the first round lead in the PBA Cheetah Championship presented by PBA Challenge Mobile Game as the GEICO PBA World Series of Bowling VI officially got underway Saturday at South Point Bowling Center.

    Allen, a 36-year-old three-time PBA Tour titlist, fired games of 185, 258, 289, 247, 298, 246 and 246 for a seven-game pinfall total of 1,769 and a three-pin lead over Jason Sterner (right) of Covington, Georgia.

The top 24 players advanced to a second seven-game qualifying round Saturday night, competing for four berths in the Cheetah Championship finals which will be contested on Saturday, Nov. 1, in the new South Point Bowling Plaza for telecast on ESPN on Sunday, Dec. 14.

201213PBABradAngelo.jpgHeading into Saturday night's second round, Brad Angelo (left) 201213PBAShawnMaldonado.jpgof Lockport, New York, was in third place with 1,743 pins followed by Shawn Maldonado (right) of Houston, Texas, with 1,723 pins and Jason Couch of Clermont, Florida, with a 1,714 total.

Joonas Jehkinen of Finland and Liz Johnson of Cheektowaga, N.Y., took the finals spot to advance with 1,664 or an average of 237.71.

"I had a bad first game, but then I got into a ball that worked better and started making shots," Allen said. "Most of it was probably due to my off-season preparation.

"I lost 15 pounds after the Summer Swing in Oklahoma last May. Physically I felt a lot better, and I worked a lot on my spine tilt from front to back and side-to-side on the approach. The end result is more shots are thrown correctly for a longer amount of time. Today was the day I really tried it in competition and it seems to be paying off."

All qualifying and match play rounds of the animal pattern events and PBA World Championship will be covered live on Xtra Frame. For subscription information, visit pba.com and click on the Xtra Frame Season Ticket link.
