Pete Weber averages 232 to top qualifying in PBA Xtra Frame Iowa Midwest Open

    Field cut to 16 for Sunday's match play round

    2014PBAPeteWeber2.jpg2014PBASeanRash2.jpgProfessional Bowlers Association Hall of Famer Pete Weber (pictured left) of St. Ann, Mo., averaged 232 after qualifying Saturday to lead a field of 16 players who advanced to match play in the PBA Xtra Frame Iowa Midwest Open at Thunderbowl in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

    Weber, who ranks fourth on the PBA Tour all-time titles list with 37 wins, bowled a 1,857 eight-game pinfall total to hold a 63-pin lead over former PBA Player of the Year and eight-time Tour winner Sean Rash (right) of Montgomery, Ill., in second with 1,794 (224 average).

    Rash managed his second-place qualifying effort despite dropping a ball on his foot earlier in the day.

    Rounding out the top five after qualifying were Aaron Lorincz (left) of Saginaw, Mich., with 1,784; three-time PBA Tour winner Ronnie Russell (right) of Marion, Ind. with 1,765, and PBA Tour rookie and Masters runnerup AJ Johnson of Oswego, Ill., 1,761.

    Sunday's match play round gets underway at 9 a.m. CT which will determine the top four players who will advance to the stepladder finals at approximately 3 p.m. Xtra Frame, PBA's online bowling channel, is providing live coverage of the Iowa Midwest Open.
