USBC Women's Championships ready to kick off first visit to Charlotte

The Charlotte, N.C., area will become a bowling mecca for thousands of women from across the country when the United States Bowling Congress Women's Championships begins April 12.
For the first time in the event's 90-year history, the USBC Women's Championships will be conducted in suburban Charlotte and will feature 8,710 five-player teams - more than 43,000 bowlers - competing for national championships.
The event, which will be conducted at Northcross Lanes in Huntersville, N.C., and AMF Carolina Lanes in Matthews, N.C., begins its 82-day run on April 12 and concludes on July 2. Team competition will be conducted at Northcross Lanes while doubles and singles events will be held at AMF Carolina Lanes.
Opening ceremonies will begin at 6:30 p.m. April 12 at Northcross Lanes. Among those scheduled to appear and welcome the bowlers are Charlotte Mayor Pat McCrory, Matthews Mayor Lee Myers and Huntersville Mayor Kim Phillips. To kick off the tournament, bowlers on the opening squad will also take part in the unique "mass ball shot."
The Women's Championships is open to any USBC female member. It features five average-based divisions, giving bowlers of all skill levels an opportunity to compete for a prize fund estimated to reach $2 million.
Highlighting the 82-day run of the tournament is the USBC Queens, which will be held April 28-May 2 at AMF Carolina Lanes. The Queens will feature the best women competitors in the world - both former professionals and amateurs - who will compete for a prize fund of $200,000. The USBC Senior Queens - for bowlers 50 years and older - will also be held at the same time at Northcross Lanes in Huntersville.
