Remy Ong and Shalin Zulkifli atop of the 2002 Asian Rankings

The 2002 Asian Bowling Federation ranking season ended with the Singapore Open Masters and the Asian Bowling Tour Grand Slam Finals, both in Singapore. A perfect venue for Singapore's best Remy Ong, who finished as Asian's top-ranked male bowler for the first time. No changes in the women's rankings as Malaysia's Shalin Zulkifli won the title for the third consecutive year.
The 24-year-old southpaw from Singapore, who improved on a second-place finish last year, earned record 603 points. Trailing by 184 points to finish as first runner-up was 2000 ranking champion Ahmed Shaheen of Qatar. Third was Shaker Al-Hassan, UAE, at 412.
Another two Qataris ended among the top 8, who qualified for the World Ranking Masters in Lake Wales, Florida (date pending), Saeed Al-Hajri (4th) and Bandar Al-Shafi (7th). Joining those five at the WRM are Filipinos Biboy Rivera (5th) and Chester King (8th) as well as Kim Kyung-Min, Korea (6th).
In the event that one or more of the top eight players won't go to Florida the next three alternates are from Malaysia: 9. Ben Heng 10., Zulmazran Zulkifli and 11. Azidi Ameran. 2001 Asian ranking champion Wu-Siu Hong of Hong Kong ended up in 21st position.
Shalin Zulkifli, 24, has won the Asian rankings every year since the inception in 2000. Like in the previous years, the 2002 Malaysian female Bowler of the Year used a strong performance in the final event to grab the title. The right-hander finished third in the Singapore Open Masters and then won the ABT Grand Slam Finals to overtake long-time leader Liza Del Rosario, Philippines, by 9 points.
Zulkifli's teammate Wendy Chai ended up in fourth place, sandwiched between Koreans Kim Sook Young (3rd) and Cha Mi Jung (5th). Reigning World Ranking Masters champion Jennifer Tan of Singapore will be able to defend her title as she landed in 6th position with teammate Valerie Teo 7th.
Malaysia's Sarah Yap edged teammate Lai Kin Ngoh (9th) and 2000 World Ranking Masters champion Jesmine Ho (10th) for the 8th and final spot. But chances are not bad for Lai and Ho to jump on the plane to Florida as Korean bowlers have not participated in the previous WRM events.
