The national men's team's hopes of competing in their third European Bowling Tour (EBT) event at the Ankara Open (Sept 19-23) in Turkey were dashed by the unavailability of return tickets for the Singapore Open (Sept 18-29).
A few days ago, the women bowlers pulled out from the tournament to concentrate on three Asian Tour events.
The men were scheduled to leave tomorrow and needed to return from Turkey on Sept 23 in time to compete in the Singapore Open Masters qualifiers the next day.
The national bowlers competed in two EBT events this year - the Czech Open and San Marino Open, both in July. (Editor's note: The Czech Open is not an EBT event.)
The men's team comprise Alex Liew, Zulmazran Zulkifli, Daniel Lim, Aaron Kong, Adrian Ang and Mohd Noer Said.
Malaysian Tenpin Bowling Congress (MTBC) high pe rformance manager Cheah Ban Cheng said although return flights from Turkey were available on Sept 26, the Congress felt it would be too taxing for the bowlers to make the Singapore Open Masters cut on the last day of the qualifiers.
The men will also be competing in the Taiwan Open (Oct 6-13).
"No doubt the Ankara Open would have provided valuable experience to the bowlers but they are also in desperate need for ranking points on the Asian Tour to qualify for next year's World Ranking Masters in Indonesia," said Ban Cheng yesterday.
"The bowlers know the situation and will go all out at the Singapore Open and Taiwan Open."
