Powers eliminates defending champion Sandelin to stay alive at USBC Senior Queens
04/29/08
Qualifying leader Sharon Powers (left) of Lakewood, Colo., rallied from the brink of elimination, defeating defending champion Lucy Sandelin of Tampa, Fla., to remain in contention for the 2008 United States Bowling Congress Senior Queens title at Skore Lanes on Monday.
Powers, 56, rolled a 249 in the final game of her three-game match to overcome a 51-pin deficit and hand Sandelin (right) her second loss in the double-elimination match play finals, 589-571.
Powers landed in the losers bracket after a 523-511 loss to Joan Reilly of Wilmington, N.C., in the first round of the winners bracket.
Sandelin lost her opening match to 2001 Senior Queens champion Fran Minton of Iowa Park, Texas, 569-525, but kept her title hopes alive with a 597-526 decision over Elizabeth Dawson of Sunnyvale, Calif.
Powers, however, made a critical ball change that turned her match with Sandelin around.
"I switched to a ball I probably should have used three or four games earlier," Powers said. "I was just too uptight. I didn't feel tired; I just had a lot of problems second-guessing myself. My bowling balls didn't feel as good as they did yesterday. When I switched, I got a different feel and I got lucky, too. I carried a couple of Brooklyns."
Powers is one of eight women who advanced to Tuesday's competition in the losers bracket. Minton and two-time Senior Queens winner Sandy Postma of Lansing, Ill., are among the eight unbeaten players in the winners bracket. Postma, the 2004 and 2006 winner, is trying to become the first three-time Senior Queens champion.
The title and $3,000 top prize will be decided at 10 a.m. (EDT) on Wednesday.
