Katai, Yoshida triumph in NHK Cup 42nd Japan All-Star Invitational Championships

The women's and men's championship matches of the NHK Cup 42nd Japan All-Star Invitational Championships at Kokubnji Park Lanes in Tokyo were clashes between two of the most experienced national members of the Japan Bowling Congress and two very promising juniors. The clash ended in a tie.
In the women’s division, national team captain Ayano Katai (left) defeated 14-year-old Yuka Oshima, 237-193, to win her second NHK Cup after 2002. During the interview after the match, Katai praised her contender as a future national team member. In the opening match, Oshima, seeded third, defeated Haruka Matsuda, 214-183.

In the men’s division, 16-year-old Daisuke Yoshida (right), ousted No. 2 seed Yasushi Koyanagi in the opening match, 214-200, and claimed the title with a 207-192 victory over No. 1 seeded Toshihiko Takahashi, an ace of the All Japan National Team.
The NHK Cup 42nd Japan All-Star Invitational Championships was the 20th event since Japan Broadcasting Corporation NHK (Nihon Hoso Kyokai), a quasi-national broadcasting corporation, granted the Cup.
To celebrate the 20th anniversary NHK created new cups for both champions. According to NHK these cups are second best cups after Sumo, Japan's national sport. Both championship matches - men and women - are broadcasted nationwide by NHK every year.
The championships, which were held at Kokubnji Park Lanes, Kokubunji-Shi, since the 23rd edition back in 1989, will not return to the 32-laner with Brunswick wooden lanes. The center will be closed because it is located in a municipal government controlled urbanization area.
The NHK Cup Japan All-Star Invitational Championships are the most significant individual championships in Japan. Only elite players such as previous champions, national team members, representatives for WTBA, ABF official championships, the prize winners of JBC official championships and bowlers, who bowled more than 1000 games in JBC approved tournaments within the year, can participate in this prestigious championships.
The men’s and women’s champions are considered to be the best bowlers in Japan.
The top 48 male and the top 30 female bowlers after 9 games qualifying advanced to the next round. to bowl another 6 games. The top 12 both men and women after 15 games qualified for round robin match play. Five games plus two games position round, 10 pins bonus for each win and 5 for a tie. The top 3 players in each division advanced to the Grand Final.
