34th Hong Kong International Open starts with fund raising team event

The 34th Hong Kong International Open Tenpin Bowling Championships will be held at the newly open Hong Kong Bowling City at Kowloon Bay from May 29 to June 7, 2008.
The Opening Ceremony was held on Friday, May 30, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. Dr. Tong Yun Kai, BBS, Vice-President of Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China had kindly consented to officiate at the Opening Ceremony.
To show the sympathy, concern and support to the Sichuan earthquake victims, the Organizing Committee had decided to raise fund during the Challenge Cup invitational competition which was held after the Opening Ceremony.
The participating teams were asked to contribute a donation for the SF & OC of HK China – Sichuan Earthquake Relief Fund. Hong Kong Tenpin Bowling Congress President Vivien Fung was pleased to announce that the players donated HK$37,000 (approx. USD4,750) and HKTBC Honorary President, Mr. Peter Lui donated HK$200,000 or more than $25,000 U.S. for a total of HK$237,000 for the Sichuan Earthquake victims.

The Hong Kong International Open is one of the legs of the 2008 Asian Bowling Federation Tour. The top 16 Asian men and top 16 Asian women bowlers from the men's and women's Open Masters event will be qualified for the ABF Tour - Hong Kong which will be held on June 8, 2008 in the same venue, Hong Kong Bowling City. The semi-finals and the finals will be delayed broadcast by NOW TV-NOW Sport Station.
The organizing committee is expecting high caliber performances from top bowlers from all over Asia, including the Women Trios Champions of the 19th Asian Championships in 2006, Chien Hsui Lan and Wang Yu Ling (left) of Chinese Taipei, and from China, 2nd Asian Indoor Games team silver medalists Zhang Yu-hong, Chen Dong-dong, Wu Su-qin and 2005 WWC Masters champion Yang Sui-ling (right).
Among the favorites in the men's division are long-time Qatar internationals Bandar Al Shafi (left), Saeed Al Hajri and Abdulla Al Qattan, the Chinese Taipei national team, and Pasut Punsanthaveekul (right) from Thailand, 2nd runner-up in this year ABF Tour – Thailand to mention a few.
Local favorite Wu Siu Hong, champion of the 32nd and 33rd Hong Kong Open will try his best to defend his title again this year.
Hong Kong's Chan Shuk Han, who won the ABF Tour – Tournament of Champions earlier this year as well as the 34th Thailand Open and 5th Kuwait Open recently, is looking forward to bag the Women Masters title on her home ground.
All the Hong Kong National Team members will use this opportunity to match their skills against top class Asian bowlers in preparation for the 20th Asian Tenpin Bowling Championships (live coverage on Bowlingdigital) which will be held from July 4-12, 2008 at the same venue.
