2008JuniorGoldLizSeibel.jpg Heading into the 2008 United States Bowling Congress Junior Gold Championships, Liz Seibel of Hellertown, Pa., has paid special attention to becoming a more consistent bowler. The work she's put in culminated with a perfect game Tuesday night.

Seibel became just the fourth female to shoot a perfect game in the 11-year history of the Junior Gold Championships, recording the 300 in the first game of the second Round of qualifying at Sterling Lanes. She finished her 18-game qualifying total Wednesday with 3,704, an average of 205 per game.

"I've bowled well this week and I've been very consistent, which is something I've been working on in preparation for this week," said Seibel, 18, who will bowl collegiately at Penn State next season. "Last year, I didn't do as well as I would have hoped in this tournament, and I think a lot of that had to do with my inconsistencies."

Seibel joins an elite list of female athletes to achieve perfection at Junior Gold and threw just the second 300 in qualifying action by a female. Last year, Kayla Bandy of Danville, Va., threw a perfect game in the final Round of qualifying, while Jennifer Wright of West Columbia, S.C., had one in the semifinals in 2006. Essence Harris of Lompoc, Calif., was the first female to shoot 300 in the finals in 1998.

"Being among that group is certainly an honor and this is something I'm never going to forget," Seibel said. "This is a major tournament and something I have trained for all year. To shoot 300 where it really matters under these circumstances was the biggest positive for me to take from this."

2008JuniorGoldGregGeering.jpg Seibel's perfect game was one of three so far this week at Sterling Lanes. Adam Chase of Seaford, N.Y., shot one Monday in the opening game, while Greg Geering of Phoenix had one of his own in the final game of qualifying Wednesday morning.

"They were all pretty decent shots, but I had a few that were pretty iffy because I got them into the hold area," Geering said. "I don't really remember most of it, I just wanted to add to my pin count and make sure I made the first cut."

Geering finished qualifying with 3,808, an average of 211 per game, and will easily advance to the semifinals, which begin Thursday morning.

"I was excited, happy and got mauled by congratulations after the 300," Geering said. "But it was a much-needed boost to my total score. It helps my confidence, but it's really a long format and anything can happen."

The 11th annual Junior Gold Championships, which is being held at Sunnybrook Lanes, Sterling Lanes and Century Bowl, features a field of nearly 1,500 of the best youth bowlers in the country competing for $100,000 in scholarships and spots on Junior Team USA.

The top four finishers who are U.S. citizens in the male and female divisions will earn automatic spots on Junior Team USA, serving as United States representatives in international competition in 2009. The National Selection Committee will choose four additional Junior Gold competitors, two males and two females, to join the 2009 team.

Qualifying wrapped up Wednesday with the last of three six-game qualifying rounds. After 18 games, the top 105 males and 57 females (including all ties) advanced to the semifinals.

The semifinalists bowl 12 additional games on Thursday to determine the top 16 males and top 16 females who compete in the finals. The remaining bowlers compete in 16 games of match play Friday with the top male and top female declared U.S. Junior Amateur champions.
