Ciminelli defeats Voss in PBA Cheetah Championship Round of 8 Match Play

Ryan Ciminelli (pictured) of Buffalo, N.Y., continued to march toward his first Professional Bowlers Association Tour title by advancing to the semifinal round of the PBA Cheetah Championship Thursday at Thunderbowl Lanes.
The 23-year-old left-hander defeated PBA Hall of Famer Brian Voss in his Round of 8 best-seven-game match, 4-2.
"The key today again was to throw hard and straight. Using a urethane ball I'm able to do that effectively," said Ciminelli. "On a lane condition where there's the potential to throw a lot of strikes, throwing the straightest line to the pocket is going to produce the best results."
Ciminelli's best previous Tour finish was seventh in the CLR Carmen Salvino Scorpion Classic last season. He is a former collegiate All-American at Erie Community College.
Ciminelli led both Cheetah Championship qualifying rounds as well as the Tour Qualifying Round to make the tournament field.
In other Round of 8 matches, Hall of Famer Norm Duke of Clermont, Fla., defeated 2007-08 PBA Player of the Year Chris Barnes of Double Oak, Texas, 4-0; Derek Sapp of Keokuk, Iowa, defeated Mike Wolfe of New Albany, Ind., 4-0, and Stevie Weber of Chalmette, La., defeated England's Stuart Williams, 4-2.
The four remaining players will compete in the semifinal this afternoon which will determine the finalists for the championship match Thursday evening.
The Cheetah Championship, conducted on PBA's Cheetah lane conditioning pattern, is the second tournament of the PBA World Series of Bowling which runs through Sept. 6.
The entire Cheetah Championship is being taped with the highlight-style telecast airing on ESPN Sunday, Nov. 8, at 1 p.m. ET.
