Three generations of 'Cowgirls' bowl in USBC Women's Championships

2006USBCWomensChampionshipLogo.jpg The Montana Cowgirls bring three generations of bowlers to the 2006 United States Bowling Congress Women's Championships presented by the Eldorado, Silver Legacy and Circus Circus, and they come by their team name honestly, boasting more than a nodding acquaintance with ranching in the Billings area.

Grandmother Lorraine Evangeline, who says she's been stepped on by more than one horse over the years, is the self-proclaimed matriarch of the Cowgirls. Daughters Helen Brown (team captain) and Cindy Evangeline represent the second generation; and Cindy's daughters Brandy Horton and Angela Jones account for the third. Teammate Lory Jennings, who talked the Cowgirls into competing in the nationals, is the "adopted daughter," rounding out the group. Competing in Division 3 (651-745 average), the team rolled 1,969 Saturday night.

Though altogether not too happy with their team score, the Cowgirls feel that just being at the nationals more than made up for it. "It was an awesome experience," says Helen Brown. "When it came time to walk out in that center lane, when they introduced us, I was teary-eyed and Angela's hands were shaking. Everybody was kind of jittery. We've never seen anything like it."

However, just to prove that folks from the Big Sky Country are made of sterner stuff, Grandmother Evangeline showed up with a severely banged-up toe, which she endured after dropping her bowling ball on it back in Billings. She delayed seeing a doctor because she didn't want to be told to stay off her feet - not with the championships pending.

"Once you go to the nationals," Evangeline says, "you're hooked. You meet the nicest people. You just got to put together a team and show up. It's loads of fun." Evangeline says they're grooming a fourth generation bowler in the person of four-year-old Gabriel Horton, Brandy's son (and Lorraine's great grandson), who owns his own ball and a 76 average.

Kegel is the official lane maintenance supplier of USBC.
